Which tenkeyless/60% should I get?
« on: Wed, 05 February 2014, 15:32:11 »
Hi guys, I'm new here and I decided that I'm going to get a new tenkeyless board with Blues+custom keycaps to complement my Quickfire TK since it's apparently difficult to replace all of the keycaps on it.
A Quickfire Rapid is out of the question because I already have a CM product and in general I don't like the "look" they have, so far the one I'm thinking of is this Leopold: http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold,tenkeyless&pid=fc200rcab
I'm on a 100 dollar budget(not including the keycaps), should I get a Poker II or a Choc Mini instead?

Your title and last question are contradictory. Do you want a TKL or 60% layout?

Sorry, I got them mixed up, tenkeyless keyboards just have the numpad chopped off while 60% ones just have the numbers/letters, right?
If that's the difference brb, changing title

Example of a 60% board:

So yes you're correct. You might also find this helpful.

I recommend a Filco MJ2 for the TKL option and Poker 2 for the 60% option. And welcome to GeekHack! :D

I can't afford the Filco for a while and the Poker is just in my budget, what would your second choice be instead of the M2 if I get a TKL?

CM Storm QFR (Quickfire Rapid) seems to be a popular choice based on my forum lurking :) They are pretty cheap, too!

Are those still really overbranded? I'm worried the case design won't go with the keycaps I want to get for it.

They used to be overbranded, but aren't anymore. There is no branding on the top of the case (just matte black), and a CMStorm logo on the back left side of the case (if you're sitting in front of the keyboard you can't see it).

The spacebar is standard size, right?
One of the reasons I'm getting another is because I can't replace all of the keycaps on my TK thanks to the 6.5x spacebar  :(

Yes, the QFR is a great board for modding in pretty much every way. Completely standard keyset.

I have both a choc mini and poker 2. I definitely recommend the poker 2 cause I fat finger too much for my noppoo. Definitely not a fan of the layout and you get used to the fn layer.

QFR is great.  There is also a programmable replacement controller board for it - Frosty Flake - so you can mod it to support a custom layout as well.

Welp, guess I'm going with the QFR after all, where do people get that grey casing for it though?

I also recommend a used Poker I or II over the Choc Mini.  I didn't like my Choc Mini at all, especially the keycaps.  Plus it's hard to replace them whereas it's not so bad for the Pokers.
I'm back.

The QFR is very nice for the price. Personally I love the 60% layout and that you can mod just about anything on it. Much more bang for your buck IMO but its all preference.

I can't afford a HHKB. I'm paying for college and I still can't justify spending 260 dollars on a keyboard.

Thanks for the answers guys, what are the keycaps on the QFR made of? Amazon says they're lasered but they don't specify whether it's PBT or ABS.
