Ubuntu and dual boot with win7

I remember it was really simply to do this with their windows installer... Not I forgot I need to petition.... I don't know how my 12 year old self did this....

just isntall win before the ubuntu, then use the livecd and ask to divide the hd.

What is LiveCD?
I have been on windows though...
And now I partitioned and am waiting for the second attempt, also waiting for my computer to copy over ubuntu to usb.

Just go to Ubuntu's site. They have a walk through waiting for you. You just need a flash drive.

Just be careful if you have a newer computer with UEFI, the procedure is slightly different.  It's not a big deal though, it can be resolved in about five minutes of Google.

I got it lol. 
The thing is though, that the boot manager is within Ubuntu and not windows 7. It boots into Ubuntu and then I can chose whether to go into windows and such.

IIRC ubuntu would install grub and detect your windows so that you could choose which os to boot.

Ah. I should probably read about this grub and such.
I managed to dual when I was 12… But that was within windows boot manager.

UEFI is the newer type of BIOS that quick was referring to. It's the firmware for your motherboard. Sometimes you will need to make changes there in order to install certain OS/boot managers.

The reason you want to install Win7/8 first is because the Windows installer will not give you the option to add any pre-installed OS (Linux) to the Windows bootloader. If you install Linux second you will have the option to use a Linux bootloader GRUB/LILO (which you should) and those bootloaders will gladly allow you to add Windows to the bootable OS list. Bootloaders are a small piece of software that are installed on the first sector of your hard drive/SSD (typically) that allows you to list and boot the installed OSs. Windows bootloaders don't play nice and will only let you boot Windows these days.

Yea this is after a year of owning this computer. I really missed Ubuntu. I know what UEFI and such is just not too sure about Linux terms like grub and such.

I figured that out about windows not playing nice. I tried installing from their wubi installer and it complained about being corrupt.

I'm aspiring to become a programmer so I really want to learn about Linux and code.

So, all you do is boot off of the USB and into the "live" version of Ubuntu. When Ubuntu loads go to the "Install Ubuntu" icon and follow the instructions. At some point it will see you have another OS installed (Windows) and it will give you 3 options I believe. One should be to keep existing OS and install Ubuntu along side Windows.

Did you get that far?

Yea! I installed it lol... I did the swap area thing and put 10% of my space to that...
And then the rest of the 100gb to ubuntu.
