Matias Tactile Quiet Pro
« on: Mon, 10 February 2014, 15:36:17 »

I participated in the reddit AMA with Edgar Matias and thought I'd support his company.  He seemed like a really smart dude with a nice sense of humor.  I recently bought this an I will be doing a thorough review of it soon.

First impression are.. I'm not sure.  I think it needs to grow on me.  It feels oddly like a Cherry Brown somehow but not really... There is tactile bump but not as sharp.  Again feels like a brown.  Not a big fan of the glossy finish.  I think I will eventually like it.  It's definitely different - which is the best part of it.  I think it deserves a place in everyone's collection but I wouldn't rate this over the buckling spring or the topre.

More to come!

I'd rate it as stiffer than brown, somewhat like Clear - and I feel it is a better experience than Cherry. You are right in that everyone should have one. It's just different. I can't wait for the 60% group buy. I'll opt for the clicky one.

I ordered one yesterday. I went for the quiet mini. I briefly tried one out previously and pressing the keys definitely felt different than cherry mx. I'm really looking forward to getting it.

I'm looking forward to your review! I'm considering purchasing the bluetooth version but is also a bit torn between it and Realforce. I see that you have both – a comparison would be highly interesting for me :)

I think Realforce (Topre) would win hands down. Topre is also a different kind of keyboard and it does have a signature thock and feel to it. While they are different, and if you are choosing either one of them and have the budget for Topre, go Realforce. The price justifies it too.

This guy: http://deskthority.net/keyboards-f2/topre-vs-matias-silent-switches-my-first-impressions-t5357.html
prefers the Matias switches. But I haven't found that many comparisons between the two. The PBC keys of the Realforce sounds appealing though. But the bluetooth on the Matias is also a win since that makes it possible to use the keyboard on a phone or tablet.

Topre vs matias... seems really hard for me to justify paying more money for a board that doesn't have replaceable switches.

Matias are definitely stiffer than brown, which is a little unfortunate.  Would be nice to have a lighter spring option available.

I'm not sure I can ever say any switch can "win" over another switch.  (Unless you are talking about the spacebar on the microsoft ergo keyboard - A pinecone would win that battle over that spacebar)  I think it's possible to say some one could prefer the Matias over the Topre.  The realforce Topre benefits not only from the marvelous switch, but it's keycap material (PBT) and the sturdy and high quality frame.  Matias I think needed to hit a certain price point so the keycaps and even the frame was I'm sure a compromise.  (Although their polycarbonate frame is a cut above most other frames)

I think the biggest problem is just awareness and folks not knowing what these switches actually feel like.  It's a real shame because everyone should be able to experience all the major switches and keycap configurations.  It took me quite a bit of $$$ to experience all major switches - well because I'm completely obsessed with mechs (like most of us here)  But it shouldn't have to be.

Perhaps I can start more "tours" :)

Judging by the photo it's a Quiet pro. Tactile pros are white and have Mac keycaps.

Don't be discourage. Matias is planning a 60% GB using the alps switch. This is the chance to get a clicky and tactile one. I am eagerly awaiting this GB!

I think the black is pretty attractive also.  The glossy finish is the only issue for me.  I see why manufactures choose this finish.  It seems to add a sense of "luxury" but it an affordable way, manufacturing wise?

I know Razer dropped their glossy finish with the new 2013's  I don't know of any other keyboard manufactures that makes this high gloss finish.   Anyone?

DAS keyboard came to mind.

As for Matias, the Ergo Pro keyboard that is launching in August is matte. So they are in the right direction too. I remember they went with glossy finish to complement the Apple computers, which are all gloss and aluminium and shiny!

That is what I'm waiting for as well.  Something clicky and soothing to the spirit and mind.
