Hi I'm new here..
« on: Sun, 16 February 2014, 05:10:29 »
Hello everyone,

I'm new here my name is Chris and I would like to ask some questions and help.

I currently own a Razer Blackwidow Tournament Edition 2014 ( I've read a couple of threads and know that Razer has somewhat bad reputation in this forums).

I would like to mod my keyboard by putting LED's on each key since the caps lock, scroll lock, and razer logo are the only ones with LED's.
I've already disassemble a Ultimate Edition ( my friend's ) and saw the PCB. I was wondering if it's possible to solder LED's in my Tournament Edition since the Cherry Keys already have holes in it for LED's.

Will it work ?

Hello and welcome to GeekHack!
I am not 100% sure but I believe the tournament edition's PCB doesn't support full LED. You can easily check this if you open the board and compare it with the ultimate edition one. See if every individual key on the PCB has 2 + and - holes for LEDs, the Cherry switches are all the same (their housing) so look on the back of the PCB not the metal plate.
This sucks more than anything that has ever sucked before.

Thank you for the quick response.

The thing is my keyboard still has its warranty and don't want to disassemble it without assurance. I was hoping if someone already did take the TE edition apart and had the same idea as me.

I say don't disassemble it as it does not support LED other than those initial keys (CapsLock, ScLock?) which already has it unless you want to change the color on them. About Razer bad rep it gets here is about their unreasonable high prices not  the build or quality which is arguable. I've owned a BW before and aside from the non standard bottom layout I liked the board, don't listen to what others say if you like it it's a good board for you and that is all that matters.

I think you cannot do it since Razer led will not work in a year anyway, but good modding experience will help you in the long run.

How come? My friend is using it 3 years now no problems what so ever. As far as I know they use standard LEDs and the PCB doesn't have any flaws as long as the unit is non defective one...

Your friend is very lucky and in minority. Ratio of Razer RMAs are quite high around here.

I don't have that much experience in keyboards and this is my first mechanical keyboard in 15 years of using the computer. I do like this keyboard a lot and probably won't replace it for a while if nothing goes wrong, thank you for the help.. I guess I won't be disassembling my keyboard then.

Have a great day ahead~!

If there is a mod around here you may close this thread. :)
