Career-changing, the first steps...
« on: Fri, 21 February 2014, 09:48:51 »
So... I'm up for a position to host a pretty big event in April and I'm trying to make a change from programming to media/hosting/journalism.

I would really appreciate it if you guys checked out my host reel. I also have a Hearthstone review up, and I'll probably making more videos once a week or so.

I'm considering getting into my keyboard nerdery, what do you think? What would you want to hear me talk about or share, if anything? Right now I'm just going with game stuff, but you know, I'm a multinerd. Anime, keyboards, science, math, programming, games and comics.

Thanks GH family.  :thumb:

once somebody tells me they are going to switch their best in the world profession of doing the most important things (programming) to something else, i feel the urgent need to shoot them

i like your makeup though (had to go through the video without the sound: can't use headphones now)
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Sometimes the best profession in the world is not the best profession for the person doing it. I'm not happy. I'm stunted. I like programming and design, but more as a creative outlet and hobby. I long to entertain people. I enjoyed being a waitress more than I enjoy programming for a career. It's something I'm good at, I make great money, but the reason I started doing it for a career, instead of a personal hobby,  is because I was struggling as a single parent. I get great enjoyment out of making people laugh and feel comfortable, far more than I ever get out of problem solving for a corporate web app or database.

I appreciate you watching very much, thank you.  :D

My favorite reviews/videos to watch are ones where people are really passionate about their topic. For example, I've spent too many hours watching WhiteFireDragon's keyboard assembly videos; just for fun. And I really like Day[9]'s videos about StarCraft2.

I think you should focus on whatever inspires you at the moment and the enthusiasm should show through. That being said, more keyboard reviews please :P.

I'd like to check out your video but I'm at work right now. :(

That's what I do already, but hosting events in esports is a time commitment that involves global travel. If anything, I'd just take on side projects in the off-season for the extra cash. I do have a child to think about, so I can't possibly do both seriously. Sometimes you just gotta do what makes you happy. And it's not like there isn't money in entertainment... it's just slower to get to it.

Thanks for the feedback, and no worries. :D

You've got a good voice for talking a lot.  Seems like you put some work into speaking clearly and understandably.  Most keyboard reviews on youtube are one of us geeks rambling on for 10 minutes with poor camera angles, ample background noise, and lots of "uh's."  If you could do something better than that, I'd say it's a good start.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing
