at101w question: anyone see this?
« on: Fri, 13 March 2009, 18:52:54 »
When I type "e" "t" and "o" together, I only get the "t" and the "o", the "e" doesnt appear, or the "o" doesnt appear.
This doesnt happen with any other combination that I've tried so far. For instance when I hit "e" with any other two letters so far all three letters show up fine.

the "ote" combination is common, for instance when typing "quote" or "toe". Thats probably why I noticed it.

examples:

o,t,e, hit together produces:
te
to
te
te
te

as opposed to:  (for example with t, o, u):
tuo
uto
tuo
tuo
tuo

Is this happening on other at101w boards out there? And, what does it mean?

If I recall correctly, my AT101W only had 2 key rollover, so I don't find it surprising that some 3 key combinations don't work.

I'll have to check this Monday, too.  I remember looking at the rollover on mine at work, and recall it being fairly decent. I also connect mine via PS2, if that is any different than what you're doing.  There were also two places of manufacture for these; Malaysia and Mexico.  There might be a difference between 'boards produced in the different regions. I think another membre here was talking about some minor quality differences between two of their Dells and noticed this.

EDIT:  The one I have at home was made in Malaysia.  I will have to check the one work on Monday.

thanks guys.  Mine does say made in malaysia.  It would suck if it has 2-key rollover. Funnily tho I never noticed this on my old dell at101w board (beige one).

p.s. I'm using a ps2-usb converter (but the good one, the one clickykeyboards recommends, that is an actual converter and not a passthru).

From a Malaysian Black AT101W over PS/2:

o, t, u:

out
out
tou
out
uot
uto

o, t, e:

te
te
te
o
ot
te

Honestly, though, I didn't expect much rollover when I got this. I went with the ABS first and had to return it because it wouldn't output anything (it would just lock) when I hit more than two keys. I went with the AT101W because it was half the price with similar switches.

The Model M (& Unicomp 'boards) are only 2 key rollover...

Thanks viett.  So I guess there's nothing 'wrong' with my board that hasnt afflicted other boards.

As for unicomp ibm etc, they may be 2 key rollover (I dont know) but I can say that I never *noticed* it; whereas with this black at101w for the first time I noticed it right away from regular typing not coming out correctly. (every time I typed "quote" quickly (I type about 90-100wpm) I would get "quot").

It doesn't go by maximum keys pressed, it goes by minimum keys pressed...

So then 1 key rollover would be true full n key rollover, would it not?

What zwmalone meant was, the smallest combo is the one that determines how many keys of rollover the board has.

So, if it failed on QW, the board would be 1-key rollover, even if you could get 100-key rollover (on a 101-key board) using combos of every key but Q or W.

damn, its also happening with i,t,e (as in the word "quite" which often comes out as 'quit' when i type fast).

With i,t,e:
te
i
i
te
it
i

a) Why have I never noticed this before? argh. I have to assume it had been happening on my beige one too but for whatever reason I never noticed.
b) I guess 2-key rollover boards arent good enough for me then.

So whats a bigfoot-alps board that has 6-key rollover?  Doesnt exist, I bet. Argh, again.

Just a thought. Have you tried it without the convertor? I have this:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.6175. Since it's too wide to use it with my MacBook, I had to plug it in the USB hub. I have to unplug and plug it back whenever I restarted my MacBook. Since, at work I have enough room to use it, I'll do a test both without and without the converter, and see what the results are.

well I dont have a computer at home that has a ps2 port :(   I could take it into work to try it out there, but its going to be mainly for home use and I dont expect to ever have a computer that has a ps2 port at home, lol. So my problem would remain.

Yes, I'll be curious to see your results.  Its a real bummer though because I just started to really like this board :(  Isnt that always the way it goes?

Like someone was saying before, I do believe that a keyboard ought to produce letters for every key I push in normal usage, just in principle it makes a difference to me. (Thats why I would never use a das! Or a tp2). A keyboard shouldnt be the source of typos! Apparently even the M1 has some issues in this regard.

I mean gosh, how hard can it be for all these manufacturers to just put out a keyboard that can handle typing?!?!? Jesus Christ.

And you know what, its funny but the model M remains the king. I dont know if its 2-key rollover -but I can type 100wpm on it and I've never had an issue like this with it. Dont know why but its just never come up. Clock speed? Deeper keystroke throw so it has time to recover? I dont know, but the problem has never come up with it in normal usage for me.

I totally understand your point of view. There are a few reasons why I took my AT101W back to the office. First of all, after having used a mechanical keyboard for a few weeks, going back to a rubber dome just did not feel the same. I kept think about my Dell, which in a way is perfect for work environment (not too loud). Second, having to replug it whenever I restart my MacBook becomes quite annoying after a while. Like you, I no longer have any computer that has a PS/2 port.

That being said, although I have not noticed the same problem, mine could well have it also. But, my typing speed is not as good as yours. Mine varies between 75-85 depending on the days, and what I am typing.

I must type slower than I think.  I never experience any of these issues on any of my keyboards with 2 KRO.  Come to think of it, all of my keyboards have 2 KRO (I don't know about my mx-11800, though).

Here is my test result. I did not even have to use the converter to experience the same problem. Please note that I did get a third letter, there was a delay before it appeared.

I got the same issues with eot but I hardly ever get a chance to type very fast.  I don't really copy documents, and I don't type super fast when I'm writing, because I have to think while I'm doing it (emails, articles, creative writing...).

well I'm living with it for now cuz I like having an alternate to the bs to switch with now and then. Too bad though, this kinda sucks for me.

ya but for whatever reason I've never seen this issue (during normal usage) with the m's. (and my raw typing speed is actually faster on the m, go figure).
