New Das 3 - Defective?
« on: Thu, 19 March 2009, 23:34:34 »
Hello,
   So tonight I received my new DAS 3 Ultimate. I like the overall feel of this board, but I am having some issues when I try combinations of Shift plus keys in the number row.

For example:
When I type underscore character, I get: _{
When I type the "plus" sign I get: +}
When I type the percent sign I get: %T
When I type the carat character I get: ^Y

I also noticed that if I press Ctrl + Left Shift key, it shuts down my machine. Has anyone ever had a problem like this with this board before?

A Das III? Defective? Never!

Call up Metadot, get it RMA'd.

I knew about the n-key rollover issue, so I was really apprehensive about buying this board. The main reason I got this is because I already have a Das 2 and wanted to compare the two. Hopefully I can get this straightened out because this thing is nice otherwise.

Just an update after using this board for one night.

Besides the issues described in my original post, I'm really liking this board as compared to the Das 2. I've used the Das 2 8 hours daily for about a year now. The Das III has a much more solid build, and the keystrokes feel much more crisp and tactile. Overall, this is a better board in every way. However, I find it really disappointing that these quality control issues could slip through on such an expensive board. I will be taking bhtooefr's advice and try to RMA my current board.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your new keyboard. I can certainly understand that feeling.  I nearly got a heart attack yesterday, when I plugged my newly received G80-3000, Windows told me that the USB device could not be installed. I felt an adrenaline rush. I switched USB port, and it worked. Phew!

Like bhtooefr suggested, you should get an RMA. There is a clear pattern there. When you press the wanted key, you also get the one underneath it, but to its right.  Are you getting @W when you press on @?

Strangely these are the only keys with this behavior. Then there is the fact that ctrl + shift shuts down my machine immediately. I'm going to try a replacement, and if I still have problems I think I will ask for my money back and go for one of the Filco Majestouch boards. I've been wanting to try the Cherry Brown switches, so I may end up getting one anyway if I can devise a plan to sneak it by the woman :-)

Patrick - where did you get your G80-3000?

There's definitely something wrong with this keyboard. Maybe you were just unlucky.

I got my G80-3000 from geminicomputers.com. Check out this thread http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=1391.

The power one is the one that makes no sense to me - power keys on most keyboards with them are usually next to the F-key row, nowhere near Ctrl OR Shift in the matrix.

Whatever you do, don't lie on the cost of the things you buy. It's really bad your the relationship. In my case, it's the other way around. I usually take a long time thinking if I should or should not buy. She's the one who usually tells me to go for it.

Do you and your wife have separate accounts?  If so, it shouldn't matter.  Otherwise, listen to Patrick.

My wife is the best. She doesn't ask about new stuff I get. There's gas in the car, food in the fridge and the bills are paid. That's all she cares about, and she pays half of everything. That is why I can "get away" with buying 30 keyboards a year.

I feel for you guys.

I'm not in a bad situation either. She'll never prevent from buying something I want. When I was telling her that I need two more, she just laughed and said, "What do you need 4 keyboards for?"

I've always favour transparency. That's why I told jpeck to not lie about the cost. Trust is very important in a relationship.

I guess I am lucky. My wife doesn't say much of anything about my computer related purchases. She has no idea what I am doing with all of it anyways and I don't have to justify any of it to her. Which is nice. ( Bear in mind that my computer related purchases are my discretionary purchases, all other important bills come first )
On the flip side, she gets on me when she see debit transactions for McDonalds and Wendys. She is not a big fan of junk food. : )

Well, similar thing on DAS 3 happened three times on my colleague. He bought one new, got two replacements all defective from DAS, then he returned all of them and got a Realforce instead. :)

Health is something my wife will get on my sh*t about. On that note, I cut out half my fast food intake and started eating oatmeal and other grains 3-4 times a week and I just found out today I dropped my cholesterol from 206 to 166 during this school year. So yeah, my wife has nothing but good things to say there as well.

You pet guys...:rolleyes: You need some of this, and then at the end buy lots of Model M's. Just because you can.

Men don't need raw meat or beer to be men. They just need to keep their balls. Good commercial, though.

Dude, I need beer.

Not to be a man or anything, but to stay sane.

For the record, my balls are still strongly attached and will stay that way for a long time. :)
