Author Topic: Ducky Shine 3 Bricked? (Read 3667 times)

Hey guys my friend's having trouble with his Ducky Shine 3, it's pretty much brand new well kept blah blah blah. I could probably open it and fix it (I'm thinking the USB port went bad or something), but I don't wanna void his warranty. However us being in Canada it's always a hassle to RMA stuff.

Basically it just suddenly stopped working in the middle of a game, all the lights went completely black, and does not detect at all as a device on either of our computers (3 different computers). I tried using my USB cable too and that didn't help. Tried to load firmware but the OK button was just greyed out on all versions.

Any ideas? o_O

That's what happened to my YOTS... It just stopped working all of a sudden one day, and it was determined dead once RMA'd.

I suggest checking for water. I had a bit of water stuck inside of a led holder, and my keyboard started going crazy, and it tends to stick around for awhile. I had to desolder the led and dry it.

I'd talk to mechanicalkeyboards.com guys, Sifo. They are official ducky RMA people for the U.S. anyway. I know they do repairs for Ducky stuff. They might be able to give you advice or take it in for repairs. I don't have a good idea what it could be--it does sound like some electrical failure--maybe the controller.

Sent PM to all them and every ducky related person I know. Not my board once again, friend wants me to open it but since he still has his lovely void sticker I don't really want to just in case

again I think either something fried or the usb is loose or dead, used to be common in detachable usb boards. So odd though

Watch it just suddenly work tomorrow... swear to god/demik

The USB socket should be underneath, right? It was for my Shine IIs. Not as easy to unplug and replug as with keyboards that have USB ports on the back out in the open. I don't see how it could have gotten loose, unless your friend disconnected the cable a lot (which would be inconvenient, due to the location, but could have caused mechanical stress fractures over time).

Nope I doubt he's taken it off at all lol. It literally just suddenly turned off completely in the middle of a match.

Doesn't seem like it would be the USB socket then. There's usually no stress on that part, if the cord is channeled through the grooves in the bottom case housing. Maybe the controller then. Check out these photos for Shine II--not sure how similar it is to Shine III. Looks like Shine II's USB connector plugs into a socket attached to the PCB and is removable:

What about the toggle switches at the bottom of the keyboard? Have you tried flipping those just in case?

Yep all dip switches have been played around with and I'm sure that's how the controller works as well, that tends to be how all fullsize boards are. Dunno what to do man I PM'd everyone :X just don't want him to have a bad impression of ducky, he's had it for 3-4 months.

You shouldnt really worry about anything. Most of us own Ducky's, and have had them for a while without any problems.

This is one thing that can help in these cases, pardon me if it has already be suggested in the thread, but this is the day of Rest and I am not working:

Try uplugging the keyboard. Then flip all DIP switches up, and then back down. Then plug the keyboard back in. See if that helps. Also, be sure that the keyboard is plugged directly into the USB and not plugged into a USB hub, switch, or extension cable. Sometimes the 'board can't get enough power to function if it is routed through other devices or longer cables. Please let me know if this helps. I will try to respond as quickly as I can...

hope your friend will have same issue as i had....... i didn't move keyboard nothing and seriosuly nothing. Just typing at work and bah "darkness" i though "ok i'm f**d". And there was nothing none reply from system. Then one of my friends said "hey i got same cable check it"..... and it did resolve problem^^.

I swapped cables, I even let him use mine.

And it wasn't plugged into USB 3, we tried 3 different computers all usb ports directly to the mobo
