Unicomp Space Saver glitchy cursor keys
« on: Mon, 10 March 2014, 11:03:59 »
So I got a Unicomp Space Saver from thekeyboardco.com and I must say that BS is a really great switch.

The overall build quality of the keyboard is a little meh - but I can live with that. But what I can't live with is that the right and left arrow keys are extremely glitchy. It's only these two keys - all other are 1a.

Sometimes those keys get registered double - like on key down and key up. And sometimes they don't registered at all until I re-press. I can reproduce the bug when I press down the key and "wobble" it around. The keyboard fires then multiple key press events. It's only these two keys though - all other keys don't do **** when I wobble them.

The problem also doesn't happen when I press down^H^H^H^Hsmash the keys with force.

So what can I do about this? Is there something I can do or should I send it back to the UK and request a replacement? I have no idea about BS switches so maybe there's a quick fix? (It must be internal to the switch because I switched key caps around but that didn't help).

How long you use it? Maybe you need just to work it a little to made those keys little less stiff?

Oh, and you could try to remove key stems, not just key caps and reattach them back.

Bought Space Saver from them too. Works like a charm.

A Unicomp "Space Saver"? Have they come out with that yet? Or do you mean the Ultra Classic? AFAIK the "Space Saver" refers to the tenkeyless version (which is rumored to be coming out the end of this year).

They have keyboard called "Spacesaver M". But it's basically same Ultra Classic with Mac keys.

I had an issue with the first Ultra Classic I bought. I called Unicomp and
they replaced the KB and paid for return shipping of the faulty keyboard.
I'd like to see Unicomp manufacturer an SSK keyboard.

This is the right idea.  Pull the keys, and when you're putting them back on lean the keyboard forward so the springs tilt forward as well.

Thanks guys. But it all didn't help. I guess I'll have to RMA ist.

That's annoying as it's the 2nd keyboard I bought from the keyboard company that was borked out of the box. (First was Filco with a fried controller). I guess I'm not gonna order again from them (2 out of 3 orders were broken for me).

I guess you are just not lucky :( But yes, what else can you do except return it?

I still - try to ask for replacement. Most of keyboardco keyboard are in completely working state. And it's best opportunity for someone living in Europe to get Unicomp keyboard. You can order it directly from Unicomp, of course, but post will be costing an arm and a leg :)
