Das Keyboard III Issues
« on: Wed, 25 March 2009, 00:52:54 »
my first das III pro likes to throw in extra characters when i do SHIFT+ 5 or SHIFT+6, plus it shuts down my computer when i do Left_SHIFT + Left_CTRL

its doing this for all 3 of my work computers, 2 of which are laptops, 1 desktop. 2 are Vista, 1 is Win 7 beta. all the same behavior (the laptops go to sleep on L_SHIFT+L_CTRL)

this is horrible :( how common is this for Das III keyboards? If I RMA, will it probably be just as busted?

are any of these issues chronic to the entire line?

There are some issues with the Das, but it shouldn't be doing that.  I would RMA it, and get another one.

sazlin - I posted a thread about this exact issue just the other day. I had to RMA mine. I just shipped it off today. If I get another dud, I will be asking for a refund!

jpeck, just curious... did they pay for the return postage, or was that left up to you?

Thanks

I hope Metadot is receiving some sort of compensation from Costar for all the issues they are having with the Das.

I definitely hope they release a Das IV without all these issues.

Also, it seems funny to me that a gaming board would have blue cherry switches.  I would expect black like the Steelseries or Gigabyte...or brown cherry.

I could be wrong, but I thought the Das was more marketed to typists more so than gamers (at least it was in the I and II days).  This, to me, would make more sense.  You're right, though, keyboards marketed to gamers should probably have browns or blacks.

Oh, I didn't know that!  Based on appearances, I just assumed it was marketed towards gamers.  My bad.

sazlin - I didn't ask them if they would pay for the return shipping. I work at FedEx, so this only cost me 4 dollars to send it back!

FYI - I shipped it back Wednesday, and they have already received the board. My replacement should ship out Monday at the latest. If I still have any issues, I think I'm going to try one of the Filco boards with the Brown Cherry switches. I've been wanting to try them for a while...

The Das is very SHINY but the 2nd try has to work flawlessly.

The Das does look really good (and SHINY) at first, but if you take a closer look at it, you'll find some imperfections that I never noticed on mine until someone here pointed them out.

They scuff/scratch extremely easily, and that was found in about the first 15 minutes of use on mine.  Otherwise, I like the Das Keyboard pretty well, but wish now that I had spent the money on a different board.  In fact, I might put mine up for trade here on the forums at some point in time.

I don't mind the looks of the Das, but even if there were no quality issues, I already know I can't take that clicking.  I like the clicking in BS and even white alps boards, but blue cherries just grated on me.  Too high-pitched.

Anyway, I'm really glad it worked out for you (and your son). :)

Actually, the Cherry blues are fast becoming my favourite board! Can't thank you enough FKSSR. I like the auditory feedback - on soft tactile switches I end up powering through the tactile bump and bottoming out. Which is really annoying when I'm typing on my sister's AT101W because the bottoming out clack is loud as all heck.

Yeah, I bottom out black alps pretty much every keystroke, but white alps don't seem to be as bad.  Really, so far, BS are the best for my typing style.  So, I thank you!!! :D
It will be hard for browns to replace them.  I should get a good idea once I finally get my Filco today...

I think white Alps would be a little easier to not bottom out on since the tactile leaf gives when pressed (then snaps back creating the click).  The black Alps' leaf does not give, thus causing the "Tug-O-War Effect" (TM ItlnStln Designs 2009). :)

haha.  I'm glad you trademarked that. :D

I do think it is the tactile leaf.  At first, I thought my fingers may not press as hard after hearing the click, but I listen to my headphones most of the day, so the click is barely, if at all, audible.

Even though I liked black alps when I first joined this board, I have to say that I'm becoming less and less a fan.  That being said, I still want to try a SGI AT101 w/ dampers.

Thought you guys might find this interesting. I also received my replacement Das last week. During the back and forth, I asked them if they were considering making a Das III type board with brown cherry switches. What do you guys make of this answer:

-----------------------------
Dear Jeff,
You are welcome!
This is exactly the place to ask that questions. However, I am not able to release that type of information at this time. I will say that you should keep checking back as we are always looking to improve our product.
------------------------

Almost sounds like a "yes, but I can't tell you" type answer to me. I would buy one immediately if they came out with it!

It sounds pretty cool, but Metadot would have to have the logic fixed on the 'board to make it worthwhile.

I think the blues are a better match.  Shiny and Clicky go well together on the Das.  On this Realforce 87 it's all Matte and Clop-Clop.  That goes together as well.  The Filco is Semigloss and Tick-Tick.  A match made in heaven.

There is order in the universe.

Hope your second Das works out fine.   I'm always looking a little suspiciously at mine - just waiting for it to act up.

- Ripster

Ripster glad you got yours sorted out too. My second DAS is also working perfectly. I mostly agree with you about the blue switches, but I'm looking for something just a bit quieter that I can take to work with me. I think I'll end up getting a Filco in the next month or so...

I think my wallet is finally letting out a sigh of relief.  I have tried just about the switches I want to try (except Cherry blues).  I think I found a long-term switch in the Cherry browns.  I am enjoying both my Filco and my G80-3000 immensely.  I would consider a Topre-based 'board only if I got to try one first.

I've only had my 87U for a couple of days but my first thought was:  "hey, this is just a very lively membrane keyboard".

I just wanted to repeat what he said, for reference ;)

How can a keyboard cause a BSOD?  I didn't even think there was enough going on inside a keyboard to bring down the whole OS.
