[WTB] AT Model F
« on: Fri, 21 March 2014, 22:42:18 »
It's time to do away with the membrane and experience the capacitive buckling spring. Please do PM me if you have one of these available. CONUS preferred to save on shipping costs.

let me speak a few words before the Model F fanatics get to you:

I like Model F most of all switch types.

However, sometimes things screw up. I've had Model Fs come to me with what seems to be keys busted out of place (during shipping?), the keyboard smashed badly (bought from someone on this site, too - and it isn't the cracked casing I was talking about on another thread!) and the spacebar fell out on my F AT when I turned it over.

One problem that even the fans will agree, is that when you replace the keycaps, sometimes it is very hard to seat the keycap precisely right. In that case, the key will not actuate or will actuate endlessly. You will have to pull it out, put it in, tilt the keyboard, etc.

Another thing that few will dispute you on, is that the casing is brittle.

My point? Capacitative buckling springs feel great, but they also have their flaws. Unless you are prepared to get your hands dirty (and often, very dirty, since the plate inside has rust on it), you might find your Model F experience disappointing.

I still have 6 months left to fix my Model F122, as promised to Fohat. After other bad experiences with the smaller XT, I really, really don't want to open it!

Thank you for the words of warning. I have plans to work with and modify this board once I get it, and I'm unconcerned by the difficulty of the job.

Still looking :)

Since you are not afraid of modding, I presume condition won't matter to you.

When I was searching for Model Fs, I noticed there was an average of 1 F AT listing every 2 weeks. If you have a six month timeframe, you should get one at reasonable cost. aka under 140 shipped.

you would do much better to watch ebay.

geekhack prices are like 20-40% higher.

You never know what you get on ebay??   A well cared for, problem free nice unit, or a rust bucket where a gasmask and hazmat suit would be recommended LOL

I'm willing to pay something extra to buy from a seller who actually knows what they're looking at. However, what I'm really hoping is that some benevolent GHer somewhere will take pity on one of their own and offer a fair price ;)

The good thing about Model Fs is that they can be completely disassembled and each part thoroughly cleaned, sanded, painted, whatever.

I plan on doing this every time as a matter of course. It takes a while but I don't have to worry about any germs or cat hairs from a previous owner.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

Geekhackers don't always know what they are doing. If you bought a Model F from Fohat it would of course be clean, but there are lots of people here who're kids who bought for fun, regretted because they didn't want to do the dirty work/ cleaning, and their stuff is filthy also.
