I am still mystified over the huge price spike on these a few months ago.

Was it a few people on this forum (+ DT or others) with very deep pockets, or some sort of speculation bubble going on?

And, I will admit, the bug was starting to get under my skin, too. I have always wanted an SSK, and started worrying that I might never get one.

“No political truth is of greater intrinsic value, or is stamped with the authority of more enlightened patrons of liberty: The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands .… may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” —James Madison, Federalist 47
“All the powers of government, legislative, executive, and judiciary, result to the legislative body. The concentrating of these in the same hands, is precisely the definition of despotic government. An ELECTIVE DESPOTISM was not the government we fought for; but one .... in which the powers of government should be so divided and balanced among several bodies of magistracy, as that no one could transcend their legal limits, without being effectually checked and restrained by the others.” — Thomas Jefferson, commentary on Federalist 48

You have the skills, do what I did with an AT.  It's one keywidth wider on the right hand side than an SSK, and it's got the F feel...

I have one really nice F AT that I plan to mod to near-ANSI, M-spacebar, and Alt keys with internal Teensy.

With that accomplished, I will probably be close enough.

One day, I hope to *cough* retire *cough* and I won't need the numpad all the time any more.

You have a teenage daughter, I remember?

There is such a thing as college in the US, unless she goes the Amish or Utah-polygamous family route.

Colleges are so exorbitant now (including state college), that you're paying two arms and two legs and a tail as well.

Methinks barring some major college reform (politically impossible) you're not going to retire for another twenty years. So let's not dream about getting rid of that numpad; in a few years your fingers will be very busy on that numpad, trying to figure out how to put your kids through college.  :(
