Speed Running - SGDQ Is Live!
« on: Tue, 29 April 2014, 21:27:32 »
Any one here into speed running games? I've been watching speed running for a few years now, and have even ran some games (though I was pretty ****ty). Anyone else share this interest/hobby?

If you have never watched speed running before, I recommend checking out Cosmo. Here is his most recent world record for Ocarina Of Time any% (beating the game as fast as possible with no other criteria).
He made quite a few mistakes, but still was able to beat his previous record by 8 or so seconds.

This is my favourite.  One handed Super Mario 64.

Run starts at 5:42.

So does all of that work on the real N64 Zelda game?

Yep. The only difference with the version he is playing is that the Chinese text is slightly faster and there is slightly less lag. It also takes a little longer to reboot the console.

Reboots/character location resets and glitches should be banned from official speedruns IMO

I think that there should just be two separate categories.  One for allowing glitches and stuff, and one for a more "legit" playing experience.

I also wish that there was more love to 100% complete speed run stuff, but that's just me.

Actually now that you mention it I do believe there are different categories of criteria.

There are for quite a few games with separate categories, but fewer people are interested in playing/watching them.

Going backwards is the fastest means of normal movement.

I'm on TeamLiquid and got introduced to Speed Running when they promoted AGDQ. I think I've been watching AGDQ and the related events for about 2 years now? My favorite Speed Runs to watch are Super Mario World, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, and Super Meat Boy.

I don't play any since I'm terrible but I really enjoy the community and watching runs.

I think that's the star where you're "supposed" to blast a hole in the wall using the cannon.   However, if you jump off the ledge at the right time, Mario's hitbox can still get the star through the wall.

That's correct.  And that's one of my favourite stars to get (I don't know why), so I wouldn't ever even try to get it the way that the speed runner does.

I don't play but I love watching speed runs.  The 4-way Super Metroid race from the last AGDQ is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.  The race is extremely close and the commentators are fantastic.

I frequently watch a lot of speed runners on twitch. AGDQ is also so awesome to watch, I have watched the last 2 or 3 years.

I am enjoying watching people speed run the Dark Souls series at the moment, but always have time for the guys doing the classics like OOT and Mario games.

I'm terrible at it but yeah. I'm not good enough at games to do speed runs :(
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

This.

I couldn't believe it when I saw it - it took me a long time to get through each level back then, and this guy just drops a grenade, takes a few steps back, runs, jumps just as the grenade explodes, and gets to the exit in a few seconds.

Things like the HL2 speedruns were amusing, until you found out that they were exploiting engine and map weaknesses, like bunnyhopping, and crossing a level just outside the playable area.

And some of the Portal speedruns were just downright depressing.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Just wondering why you find exploiting the engine 'unamusing'. I think that it's pretty great, except that for the fact that now all speed runs depend on inconsistent clipping in order to get close to WR.

A lot of people have that mentality, but I disagree wholeheartedly with it. I love finding and exploiting glitches in games for speedrunning. But I'm a programmer and game designer. I like finding the bugs and then figuring out why they are occuring and how I would fix them if I was making the game. I do however dislike Toolassisted runs (and by this I don't mean runs like TASbot that are completely done by a computer, but the people who use things like aimbots or auto bunny hop).
