impulse buying - help me stop
« on: Fri, 02 May 2014, 08:27:40 »
I want to buy the 55g realforce for ONLY $200 RIGHT NOW at elitekeyboards. However I have two perfectly good and working keyboards here to use. I also want a 144hz monitor which I could totally save my money and buy instead. Why do I want to buy the 55g? Why? Help me fix my addiction.  :blank:

This^^

If you really WANT a 55g Realforce, you're not going to be satisfied until you GET a 55g Realforce. If it turns out to suit you well, you may just sell your other keyboards and use that money for the monitor :)

In reality, however, it's hard to get rid of boards.... They tend to pile up instead.

Buying more keycaps,

I'd only buy a Topre if you're sure keyboarding is your hobby and if you're sure this is what you enjoy.

For me, there is no doubt that this is my hobby and this is what I enjoy.  Bought a 55g, love it, rotate it monthly but still prefer MX (mainly from a building/customizing perspective)

Topre was worth it for the knowledge and experience.  Respect the switch, even if it's not my favorite.

Oh wait was that not the answer you were looking for?

The key is to force yourself to WAIT for a long period of time, about a month. If you still want it then, it's probably worthwhile. But the desire for impulse Items will pass.

As for how to force yourself to wait? It comes down to self control. One trick is to think of what that money could do for you in your other hobbies. That always puts things in perspective for me.
Please consider carefully before you decide to comment, for Jesus.

Wrong place to ask lol but, consider: would you rather have the money in your hand, or the keyboard (or monitor) on your desk?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Every time I buy a board, I say: "I'm done!"

That was back when I bought my WASD for work.

Then I bought a KC 108 because it was cheap and the right colours.

Then I bought a model M that's older than me.

Now I'm done.

but I want to try MX Greeeeeens...

I'm doing exactly the same thing. And this forum really is absolutely the kind of place to make me feel like I'm doing the right thing :D

The point about preferring cash in the bank or keyboard on the desk is exactly the right point though. If you're earning the money and you have the rent covered... That's what I keep telling myself

If you really WANT one you won't rest until you've tried it. A year ago I bought my Filco, knowing that I wanted a Topre as well. So, after a year I flipped the switch, couldn't resist myself any longer and got myself that HHKB Pro 2 :P And it's not over.. already looking for Clears and Silent Topre, not to mention some juicy DSA PBT's. I think I'm addicted as well.. Oh well as long as I have the $$$ I don't mind it too much.

Q. "Why do I want to buy a 55-gram?"
A.  Because the 87UB has exceptional key-switch feel and responsiveness.

If you prefer a medium-heavy key-switch (lighter than and not fatiguing like MX Blacks, but noticeably heavier and more stable than MX Blues), there's but one way to 'fix' the want-to-buy an 87UB/55g: go to EK.

The 55-gram isn't silenced, but it's pretty quiet, except for a subtle 'thock', which is a solid sound and a pleasure to hear with each struck key. I hear it because I bottom-out my key strikes.

When you unbox it, type on it, you immediately know why you ordered one ;) Honestly, it's a great keyboard (of course YMMV). Thick PCB, plate mounted, PBT caps, sturdy, heavy. What else is there to want? :D (Except for more Topre keycaps, but ok..)

Hey, at least the 55g can easily sell back to the forums. Then again you may end up loving it. Win win.

We are bad people. I think those nice photos helped seal the deal.

By the way, anyone want to buy a 55g Topre keyboard for cheap? Only kidding!

I hope you find the keyboard to be the best ever. And the black/gray keys really
look nice in an 87U. Enjoy it, keyboard brother.

In fact, for me it was a friend of mine who was interested in getting a mechanical - originally he was talking about backlit ones, but once that stopped and he bought my Das off of me is when I came back here after a long hiatus and during which I was also just using what I had in a slow rotation. (The Das had just been sitting there practically new). Now I'm typing on my first completed project since then, a dell with matias clicky switches.

it arrived last thursday. this is the best keyboard purchase I've made after going through 10+ keyboards. thanks bros.

also, whoever said going back to MX after 55g topre was like going back to a toy... you have no idea how right you are. the 55g topre is stupidly solid, and the build quality of the realforce destroys that of the HHKB.

if I still like it as much as I do right now after 2 weeks I'm going to sell my other 2 boards for sure. the 55g realforce is that much better, honestly. I'd highly recommend buying it even if you think you don't need it (like I did)

:blank:

I bought the same board and now I'm selling my cherry mx boards and not looking back. Will be saving some money since Topre doesn't make keycaps anymore. I went though a phase though where I was buying and trading boards probably every 2 weeks or so and had to literally not go online because I would end up getting something different. :p
