Post your "old school" stuff! :)
« on: Wed, 14 May 2014, 15:51:12 »
A thread dedicated to the "old school"!

Here's mine:

PCBoard, DESQview, dual USR 14.4k modems while tying up the family's precious phone lines. Those were good times!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCBoard
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DESQview

Anyone else ever use or sysop any BBS's back in the day?

Remember ACiD?

I had a Tandy 1000TL, dual 3.5 inch floppies with no hard drive, with a Hayes 1200 or 2400 baud modem that I used to access many BBSs I don't remember the names of (mostly looking for free games.) I do remember we had a subscription to PC-Link and Compuserve. Do you remember Leisure Suit Larry?

Damn, I thought this was a thread for posting old school work and notes and stuff.  I'll need to dig up some old stuff to add to the thread that is actually relevant.

Yes!  I got into BBSs circa 1994 shortly before getting Internet access.  I can remember downloading the shareware version of Descent from a BBS in 2 chunks of 2 megs each.  It took so long that I went to dinner and came back and it was still going.

Used to give me nightmares as a child. Had a dream that the dog jumped through the bathroom window while I was taking a **** and beat me to death with a cast-iron pan. No joke.

Looking back on that now, I realize I was simply predicting Conker's Bad Fur Day...

First game I can remember playing to death was zaxxon on an IBM PCjr (famous for worst keyboard ever)

When I had my own computer, one of the earliest was Duke Nukem

But my favorite game of the DOS era was Tyrian

Of course, I was using one of these, before I knew it was cool

Huh!  I remember those.  A buddy of mine came back from a gaming convention in San Francisco in 1993, had a couple of long boxes of card packs.  One box full of packs he handed around as gifts, the other one he ended up selling unopened for major moolah.  Fun times.

I found a bunch of 5.25" floppy disks while searching for something in the dim, dark recesses at the back of the garden shed recently.

Have to dig them out again for a photo shoot if anyone is interested.

Although really 3.5" floppies are probably a historical novelty now too :p

Got those too, and a few Zip disks lying around.  I threw the internal and external Zip drives out a while back - click of death :(

Yeah, I'm basically just going to spam this thread once I move into my new place and unpack my old video games and other gear.  Stay tuned, my friends.  As a teaser, here's an old setup from a few houses ago.  "Old school" audio gear is my jam.

Note the 8x10 print from a 35mm film camera, hand developed and enlarged.  If that's not old school enough for you, then I don't know what to say.   :-*
