Every computer, game system, camera and other similar electronic device is named and numbered (With additional descriptive letters to know what each thing is). Every peripheral and data storage device is also numbered.
I can pretty much refer to any electronic thing I own by a series of numbers (it also helps that every wifi-enabled thing also has their local IP set to match their unique numbers).
i do something similar, devices that connect to the network are continents in everquest and the network id is name of the world.
i think this started at least 10 years ago
