GH Forum Navigation 12345 [Next] <- where is this?
« on: Tue, 27 May 2014, 23:38:59 »
How come GH's Simple Machines forum software does not contain a "Next" link (or previous if there are many pages) to move to the next page in a topic?

I use Vimium / VimFX extensions for Chrome / Firefox (respectively) and cannot press the keyboard shortcuts (usually "[" and "]" ) that moves to the previous or next pages because they are missing here!

Does anybody else miss this?

Perhaps it is a template issues, but I'm sure that SMF has this built in (I'll have to see if there is other templates available in my Profile section - although I am a fan of the orange on black!)

Possibly I can configure Vimium,VimFX to figure out how to go to the next page on the topic, but I haven't had to do that in the past....

I usually just click the page numbers at the top and bottom of the page.

But yes, next and prev buttons would be convenient :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I can relate. Too many times have my thumbs hit the number next to it/"Go down" (then I try to hit the last number and end up hitting "Go up"), or worse, the dots, that open up 1029381203 new numbers!

So what's weird is that there is a mod for the SMF forum software:

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2197

That "enhances" the Previous / Next links, but that implies that they are already supposed to be there (which as I said - is usually a default feature in most forums vbulletin, phpBB, and even SMF).

So somehow it seems that the template they are using is missing this.  If anybody knows how to contact the webmaster (or know whom it is) please refer them to this thread.  (and suggest that he add in a "Website:Features, Suggestions, or Bugs" forum for this type of post.  I bet if we had it we'd get plenty of people looking to improve GH).

P.S. I am available to help with anything relating to forum/php setup or enhancement.  this is what I do at my company and we have a pretty modified vB installation.

P.P.S.  I bet there are a ton of people on GH w/ the skills to do all sorts of cool stuff to our beloved website - and I bet most would be willing to lend in their time and assistance for free.

Is it possible then to move this post to that subforum?  perhaps it will get more attention there....

Being that this is a keyboard forum, wouldn't it be nice to be able to do navigate with our keyboards. Like on imgur, if I press left or right, I move to the next image. This would be nice for browsing through pages of stuff. Is this possible? I'm sure there are other things we can do. (and I know it's possible, but I'm thinking a better way than tabbing through every link until I get the one I'm looking for...)

Also, more keyboard shortcuts for typing in the quick reply box, like Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, etc. like they are available in the full reply section.

So - have you tried Vimium for Chrome or VimFX for Firefox?  This is what I use and it does a lot of what you mentioned.  The biggest complaint I have is that one of the best functions (pressing "[" and "]") doesn't work because we don't have Previous and Next links.... I apologize if you already know all this, but just wanted to be sure... :)

And FYI- there are a few others - these are the "easiest"... the most advanced one is arguable "Pentadactyl" ... if you are a vi/vim user then you may want something more robust.... but Vimium and VimFX are just enough for me.

One other thing I should point out.... Google has their own set of Keyboard shortcuts (and VimFX and VimFX do not work on Google Gmail/Calendar pages because of this).  Here is info on that... it is not enabled by default (I think)... press ? in gmail to find out (the question mark character).  Here is links to the documentation on the built in shortcuts:

https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/157179?hl=en

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6594?hl=en

Some of them are similar to Vimium/VimFX

Also note Vimium/VimFX do not work on Chrome settings pages, extension pages, and other "built-in" type pages.

Hmm. This will take some time to get used to for sure, but it seems very efficient. I think I'd like to change some of the shortcuts (switch Shift+f for f) to make it more efficient for how I browse.

The only thing you have to do when you get to a page to "bypass" the shortcuts is press "i" to get into insert mode.  This may be an option instead of changing the default shortcuts.  You may want to keep them Default so you will be learning "VIM" at the same time... and then when you are ready to get into using a "Real" text editor, you'll have a jump start....why use Vim?

Quick tip on this: if you forget to press shift-f because you want to open a link in a new window/tab, you can just type shift+the letters to hit the link. This is what I always end up doing in practice.

Hmm. This doesn't seem to work for me. Though I think af is a better choice, instead of swapping F for f.

I enjoyed the "like playing operation" reference earlier in the thread when using a mobile, so true haha.

Are you who play operation on mobile using iOS? With Android, I find it very easy to press, even when zoomed out to the max. But with iOS, I always have to get very close to the link/button before it recognizes what I'm trying to do.

No I am also on Android, use chrome too if that means anything. I think I might just have fat fingers, I find myself zooming in so far to make sure I don't hit the wrong number haha.

What does this mean? I'm trying to nail down how to do everything with VimFx, and this I do not understand:

Code: [Select]
c-J
c-f
etc.

Allright, not to be picky or unappreciative here, but this is moving between Topics - I guess what I was referring to is like when you have search results in Google and you want to go to the next page.... I was thinking when a particular Topic has 5 pages, by pressing Next you would go from Page #1, to Page #2 (instead of having to press the # 2)....this i think is what we all were thinking about... am I right?

The SMF feature that is tweaked by the mod you posted above?  That is the feature that I enabled.  I get that it's not what you expected.  I've added it to my list of forum enhancements.  SMF's template currently doesn't generate those links.

OK - that is odd.  I'll look around for you.... you're right about that enhancement... it is to modify the exact configuration option you enabled.  I'm just suprised they don't have a similar one for "Pagination" <- I believe that is the correct term.

The other thing you usually see in a forum is an option of how many posts to display on a page. usually you can choose from a drop down. Again - I'm surprised SMF is lacking this.  All in all it is really quite a nice software product (better than phpBB I think).  You know.. I have a full VBulletin license complete w/ custom branding options (meaning you can remove the link to vbulletin from the footer).  It's worth probably about $700 or so... if you are ever intersted in moving away from SMF and are interested in vbulletin - I'd be happy to donate it (the license - and help you set it up / convert to it).  FWIW..

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/09/pagination-with-relnext-and-relprev.html

Interesting article of how pagination is handled from an SEO perspective... (Basically you want to keep "Page 1" in the search engines - or even better an "All Posts" page.  Of course Google is this sophisticated... glad I'm out of the SEO game... what a nightmare it is to try to keep on top!  I really don't think GH care's too much about SEO seeing that there isn't any advertising.  Which brings up a good point... how is this funded?  Simply the "Donate" button?

Here's the relevant mod:  http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3235

It is compatible w/ version 2.0.1 - 2.0.2 (this forum is 2.0.7) but it probably would work.  Anyways - if you don't want to bother with this - it's fine....and you can lock this thread off when appropriate if you do that as general practice.

Hover over Profile in the top bar, then click on Account Settings. Then, hover over Modify Profile, and click on Look and Layouot. There, you will find what you're looking for.

This site used to be on vbulletin, but moved away from it due to the infamous rootworm.

This thread just got way too technical for me now haha. I am just happy to be here  :D

The main site I use (mutli gaming community type place) uses software called discourse for their forum, I really like how that works and looks. Like I say I don't know anything about the behind the scenes work of any of this but if anyone would like a look just have a google for it or pop to our site (link is on the little globe thing under my avatar).

Yeah, we don't need that complicated mod.  The core generates the necessary links.  It's just that the default template doesn't display them.  Oddly, the mobile template does.
