New user, but mechanical user for two years

Hello everyone,

I may be a new user to GeekHack, but I have been using a mechanical for a while. I bought a Filco TKL MX Blue off Amazon around two years ago. Shortly after, I replaced them using pure white PBT keycaps from qtan. Overall, I am very satisfied with my keyboard, but I want to try something new. I was considering getting another Filco and then just change the key switches with lots of soldering. I want to try green and clears. I've used browns before, but I didn't like it because the tactile bump was barely noticeable. However, I'm more seriously considering getting Topres. Any recommendations?

Welcome to Geekhack! :cool:

Are you looking to stick to the TKL form factor or want to try something new like a 60%?

If you want to try out some switches, you could get a CM Storm Mechanical Key Switch Demo Board since it has Red, Black, Brown, Green, Blue, and Clear.  Use the spring from a red/blue/brown in a clear and the you have an ergo clear!

I personally use lubed browns, vintage browns, and 55g ergo clears.

Clears do have a more noticeable bump but are a bit heavy for me so I did a spring swap to 55g springs for all keys except Esc (I usually pound this hard :))), Space Bar, and the stabilized keys (Left Shift, Right Shift, Back Space, and Enter).

I can't comment on Topre since I have yet to venture down that path.

Have you thought about looking into buckling spring or Alps switches? Those are nice alternative switches to MX and Topre.

Welcome! Glad to hear you're looking into clears. A lot of people get into clears, then realize they're too heavy for them, then mod to ergo clears. I kinda went the other way and put slightly heavier springs in mine. IMO, they're the most comfortable cherry switch I've typed on, and the only ones I'm keeping around. As CPT said though, alps are a wonderful alternative if you can find the switch that meets your needs (but with so many variations, it's a lot of trial and error).
