KTOD - Favorite case design?
« on: Wed, 04 June 2014, 12:26:30 »
I don't really have anything in depth in mind for today's KTOD. Was in a thread talking about the GON/Vicky/Corsair K65 style cases and thought this might be fun. Do you like...

or bent sheet metal designs

from mkawa

or CNC milled cases

from photekq

or Plastic Cases
(think Filco or Ducky style)

or something else I didn't list? Why do you like that case?

Personally, I love the milled block cases like the KMAC or TEK80 or LZ-GH. It's so heavy and I just *love* having a slab of Aluminum 6061 on my desk. It makes my inner engineer so happy. And I really enjoy the weight of them. But I also think that the layered cases from Matt30's customs or the Epsilon/jdcarpe styled two-plate cases are cool.

Aesthetically, the Ducky/Filco case looks best to me. The thing is, most cases make the keyboard sit too high for me, so I'm working on a no-case solution to fit my needs ;D

That could be really cool. If your plate and PCB had holes to be able to pass some legs through it so you could adjust the height and angle but didn't need a case?

CNC Milled are my absolute favorite. My Digilog case is the most solid case I've ever touched, and I love it. I would love it if somebody would come out with an HHKB case as well. A close second are GON's cases. I love the minimal design and the way the light shines through the sides.

Oh I can't believe I didn't mention it before, but I distinctly remember looking at the Duck Mini V1 case with the card suits when I first started. That **** was and still is awesome. Loved that case and that little extra flair with the suits.

GON cases look sick for 60 boards.
Supposedly Milled Aluminium is best for feel (someone please PM me and tell me it's worth!)

I love the look/options of 3 piece layered acryllic cases, but will admit that they are not the best.  Still tho...

Yes, that would be a way to do it. But in that case (pun not intended), we're not talking about "case design" anymore  ;D

I need to try a milled case (and want a hammer case), but I'm in love with wood cases right now.  My Pure is in a wood case right now  and have another one for my GH60/FaceW (just a sample pic since mine will be walnut, red gum, or cedar).  I just love how wood cases.feel and sound.

I'd have to say CNC milled. They look awesome and feel solid.

Although I think Filco cases look pretty nice too.

I've got a block of cedar I'm working on right now, but waiting for the Face-W for fitting and final sanding.  Did you use a solid block or fit pieces together?  Sorry if it's in your links.  At work and limited to browsing slowly.

I've owned more milled cases (5), than plastic (4).  Not that it speaks to my preference or anything.

ps. KOTD is a great idea to keep chat fresh!

I like the platecase. Like the original DOXkb and the samwisekoi GH75 you have pictured. GON has one now as well, I think.

It's a combination of minimal, rigid, and awesome. I think it's a tragedy that aluminum plates aren't bent down at the edges like commercial plates are. Increasing the moment of inertia is really great and would help them a lot. The platecase, ofcourse, does not have this issue.

I have an eye for the boards that don't have cases.  Either ones that are the just the keys mounted to a plate, or ones that are very minimal cased - like a poker.

Of course, this is all while my daily driver is a Unicomp with a 'classic' case....

Heavy CNC'd cases are my favorite by far. Since I'm a fan of 60% boards, having something that small and that heavy is just a slice of heaven. I've tried other aluminum cases that aren't heavy, like the TEX 60% and the MKC 60% and I don't like them as much. They are still a step up from a plastic case, but the heavier the better in my book.

My Favorites
1. Duck Poker v1 with the brass weights and Poker Suit is a work of art

2. The Hammer 60% is a beast (heavier than the Duck Poker) and a little nicer quality. In fact, I wish I had a second one in silver since they're such a great case.

My Wish List
1. FMJ Design One with Poker Suits, in Black.

I think that:
  • If a keyboard has exposed switches then it shouldn't have any borders. In other words, its footprint shouldn't be larger than what is covered by its keycaps.
Also, there shouldn't be any spacing between keys exposing any plate - raised sections between keys are OK though.
  • All borders should preferably have the same thickness. The front border should be the same thickness as the side borders. KeyCool, Leopold, SteelSeries: good, Ducky,Filco: bad. There is the exception if the front border is sloping.
  • Keyboards should be as flat as possible. If you want to incline it, you extend feet or screw on feet.

I'm a huge fan of KMAC cases.  I love mine, and another is one the way  :thumb:  I'm a sucker for aluminum now.  I love the weight and how durable it feels.  I hope my Duck Viper will feel the same whenever that GB comes around.

I love the chunky metal KMAC cases. I also love the Orion TKL with the acrylic band that allows the side LED's to shine through...so nice.
