Hokey keyboards and ancient computers are no match for a modded Kinesis at your side.

I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

Do you know what the difference between an IBM and a Dell is?
The pricetag.
Oh, and Dell actually still makes PCs. I wonder if there's a correlation...

You guys need to listen to some new music.  Life goes on after College.

That is one of my goals in life. I do not want to be one of those guys who spends the rest of his life listening to the same music he was listening to in his 20's. Classic Rock radio is cool for short periods of time for the nostalgia factor, but I cringe when I run into people who still trying to have a Peaceful Easy Feeling while getting the LED out and are Back in Black with Bad Company every weekend.

I just voted. I listen to SOME of the same music as the 26 year olds I work with. Some of those and even younger ones can't keep up with me. I have a 32 year old married daughter. I'm in better condition than most of the kids I work with (this is a very sad fact). I am 54...55 in 10 weeks.
Age is how you live it.

It is kind of weird knowing I'm typing on a keyboard older than me. And to think, it was sitting somewhere in a school basement, waiting, years, for my arrival and to pick it up.

If I want to type on a keyboard older than me, I've got to use something like this:

Man, there are a lot of young punks here. It's disturbing to think that the majority of the people here grew up in an era of Windows dominance, after the infinite variety of unique and mysterious computers had already been crushed and wiped away - like dead bugs on the windshield of time.

(...did that make sense? Whatever. I'm too old to care.)

I've had great experiences lately with my HP notebook and this awesome beast:

I don't really understand the nostalgia for obsolete hardware. Keyboards, ok, but old IBM computers?

Yuck! It even looks funny, all those weird patterns, it's like they want you to get a seizure.

No, I don't mean old IBMs for my main computers, I mean the modern ones (the ones that everyone seemingly hates). There actually were some quad core IBM computers made: but I haven't seen any of them poking around ebay.

Hey I loved windows 98; some of those DOS games were cool: even if the same graphics were around 10 years prior :)

Yeah, I never really knew about the "Commodore 64" or "amiga" until way later. I always knew about macs, those vices of blight.

I would assume vintage keyboards are popular with the older people who used them and could judge when rubber domes came along. Whereas the 'youngins in my generation are completely oblivious of the horrible keyboards they utilize.

I'm not even going to argue on the features that you cannot "custom build" that exist in IBM workstations.

ECC RAM, LED lights on mobo to detect certain problems accompanied by warning LED on front panel (DIMMs, fans, PCI cards etc), SCSI adatper, SAS adapter (with side rails), BTX (better than ATX), and can't think of anything else at the top of my head.
I do like how roomy they are and the vast multitude of ports.

I see nothing in that list which hasn't been available at one time or another, or probably currently available if you look hard enough, on hardware you could buy for a custom build.

For $300 xD

I guess you probably COULD make something remotely similar with custom building, but it would take a lot of time, searching for the right parts, etc. I like having it all prebuilt with a cool stripey IBM.

It's a computer that can sit on your desk. This is distinct from a deskside computer which sits beside the desk, a laptop which can sit on your lap, and a netbook that could sit on your... net?

And spare me the workstation ****e, if it's not a *nix machine, it's not a workstation.

ECC: Go into the Server motherboards section of Newegg. Problem solved.
Diagnostic LEDs: Some motherboards have that, and there's PCI cards that give that.
SCSI: Again, go into the Server motherboards section. Or look for "SCSI adapter."
SAS: See SCSI.
Side rails: Pick the right case. Spend 5 minutes reading case reviews.
BTX: Uh... that's debatable. BTX only made sense in a machine pumping out Pentium 4 heat levels, and fails miserably when the memory controller is built into the CPU, which is why there were very few BTX AMD systems. And now Intel CPUs also have the memory controller built in.

Nothing I'd miss, although those LEDs would have been nice. My brother has an ASUS motherboard with such a feature.
I don't care about ECC RAM, so I don't want to pay for it.
Oh, and BTX is no issue if you take a case with the PSU at the bottom. My Antec P183 does it nicely.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I prefer a newer machine.

Really?  I'm pretty sure it's possible to be one.  However I do understand if the confusion is overwhelming for you.

Under 20 means:
age < 20

20 or under means:
age <= 20

21 - 30 means just that - 21 <= age <= 30.

As a result, there is no valid poll option for anyone who is twenty years old.

I thought vBulletin allowed for the alterations of descriptions for existing poll options at any time (just not the addition/removal of the # of options once a poll has started).

Avg age at Geekhack is essentially unchanged at N=244.  29.71.

Although I have no evidence I suspect it's 14 at OCN.

It may not be 14, but the average mentality parallels a 14 year olds.
