Stupid MS Windows Does Not Stay Sleep
« on: Sat, 28 June 2014, 04:07:13 »
My home PC, a MS Windows 8, always wake up itself when I put it to sleep. It's as though those clacks or Brobots in the keyboard started jumping or moving to wake the PC up - no, must be some stupid settings. For the life of me, I don't know what is the settings. I've checked everything off - no wake up from LAN, no wake up from mouse movement, only keyboard.. so it must be the clacks and bots. Help!

Check your switches. The Esc key is dodgy on my Pure and will fire off random keystrokes every now and again, just need to resolder it but I'm too lazy :p
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I don't really think it's the keyboard. I have changed to another keyboard and it happened, I am suspecting it is something to do with the motherboard or probably just the OS. I suspect many here does not switch off the PC or put it to sleep so I am probably the odd one out here.

Have you tried using the keyboard in another USB port?

Other than that check what you have running in the background when you try and sleep it

Can you unplug the keyboard completely and put the computer to sleep with the mouse only?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I've had the same problems, what I did was go into the device manager and switch off "can wake up computer" on everything except my mouse. That worked.

Apparently one of my keyboard kept waking up the pc.

(I also use windows 8 )

Simply sleep is broken on Windows 8.x. I have 2 PC with 8.1 and neither of them ever sleep properly. It seems there are multiple sources for the problem including it being on a network with other computers that have shares and onedrive and other modern apps syncing things very frequently. I had a workaround applied
Code: [Select]
powercfg -requestsoverride DRIVER "\FileSystem\srvnet" System Awaymodethat worked for awhile but it seemed to be defeated on the last round of Windows updates. Basically the only way I've found to get them to sleep on their own and stay asleep successfully is to disable the network connection :/

Thanks Ivan. I suspect it is Windows 8! This is infuriating.

To Ms widows: it is the behavior that caused me to call it stupid, so yeah, it's dumb!!

It's really the only thing that irritates me about Windows 8.x. Perhaps give LightsOut a try? I have it on my server2012 system and it works pretty good. I forgot they have a desktop version of it... LOL.

I'll try that. Now after reading your earlier post, I remember doing that powercfg command line before and turn off all the devices that was listed. And that worked. What I didn't realize was that the Windows Update defaulted it back. I just assumed that the command line was broken. Perhaps that is easier for me than installing another new program. Thanks, mate.

My Linux box goes to sleep most of the times I ask it to, but not always. When it doesn't, trying again does not make it go to sleep.
