IBM Wheelwriter O-rings harvest! for Model M's
« on: Sat, 28 June 2014, 13:01:29 »
Just wanted to chare this piece of info.

Check if there are little plastic o-rings underneath the key-caps. I've put some on my Model M. It fits perfectly. Silences the keyboard a bit and softer landing!

I have three or four wheelwriter keyboards, and none of them had anything different on the barrel frame or under the keycaps.

Could it have been exclusive to that 6747 you have, or possibly something aftermarket?

No really? Don't know about other models. Assumed other models also had these O-rings. Later, got a smaller portable Wheelwriter version, the Personal wheelwriter. And there weren't O-rings either. Maybe just on the 6747 then...Makes it more rare and valuable!  :)) Grab one if you can!!

Odd idea to dampen the sound of the keys when the sound of the typing mechanism is so much louder.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Which reminds me... people have mentioned that they can't imagine how loud it would be working in an office full of people on Model M's, but what about an office full of people working on typewriters?

Hmm, just an oring that fits over the outside of the barrel (or chimney).  Will have to measure that diameter...

Tried to find new high quality O-rings at the local car shop. The shop had o-rings they use in car engines and are strong enough to resist petrol. They were 0,50 euro per piece, and they only had 6. Because they are rarely sold and could only be bought as a box with bigger sizes.
Couldn't find anywhere else, tried Amazon also.

measurements:

Inside diameter: 12mm

Outside diameter: 16mm

Height: 2mm

Did you try your local home improvement or hardware store?  They should have 0-rings there for plumbing applications and may sell them in large batches for cheap.

Great thanks for your advise! Home improvement shops  didn't have it. There are few hardware shops in Holland, almost none. But there is a big hardware webshop here, and all I found was some o-ring from model airplane engines (propellor part?). Kinda expensive though...

12mm ID is not much smaller than 1/2" (inch); which is the size of Danco #10 o-rings.  They are usually sold in 10 packs for ~$2 USD.

I have no complaints about the sound my BS Unicomp, but I may add some o-rings just to hear what the effect on the sound is.

I'm selling the O-rings from the IBM 6747 typewriter. Anybody want? $5 for all O-rings excl. shipping. I'll make a thread on GH selling.
