[WTB] A few specific ALPS caps
« on: Tue, 01 July 2014, 22:56:05 »
I've covered MOST of my AT101W with decent double-shot caps from a pair of Focus 2001s, but I need four specific keys to finish it off:

Conventional Two-tone colour scheme (black on white/beige) and profile.

I'll settle for dyesub, but would prefer double-shots.  I want it to be that "traditional" sans-serif, sort-of-Helvetica/Arial font, of vintage doubleshots.

For colour comparison:

What I need, specifically:

* 1.5x white |\
* 2.25x (ANSI) Enter
* One 1.25x Alt key
* The awkward lock key-- it's 1.75x, but the stem lines up with Tab, not the centre, and it's stepped.

I can offer excitingly small sums of money!  Literally thousands.... of won!

I go thrift store shopping a couple of times a month. I'll keep my eyes open for these. I might already have some stored away but I still haven't unpacked all my keyboards yet.

I'll let you know what I find.

I feel like most of the places you can find the specific Tai Hao Alps doubleshots you’re looking for are going to be keyboards that are pretty desirable in themselves, like e.g. the Northgate Omnikey 101, and Alps-made doubleshots aren’t going to quite match. Actually, I’m not sure if there are even any keyboards with Tai Hao doubleshots and a caps lock with a top step the size of the tab key.

If you’re interested, I have a set of middle-gray-on-offwhite and dark-gray-on-middle-gray Alps-made doubleshots, with an ANSI main section/F keys, but with arrow keys up above all in top-row profile, a funny truncated numpad, and missing insert/delete/home/end/pgup/pgdn. (From an old luggable.) They’re slightly yellowed, but I think they actually look quite good that way, kind of creamy.

I’d be willing to sell you the whole set (they’re a bit nicer than the Tai Hao ones IMO, though you’d probably stick with the ones you have for the arrows / nav keys) for pretty cheap, say $40 shipped?

I appreciate the offer, but honestly, that would be 1) a little more than I want to spend, and 2) wouldn't really solve the problem... that would leave me with still no obvious way to get to a complete, semi-coherent look.

I'm not bothered by the slight irregularity between, say, Focus doubleshot beige and Monterrey dyesub beige....  Colour mismatch and imperfection are sort of a given until we can finally herd the cats that are ALPS fans into ordering a single all-singing all-dancing set from SP.

Right now, I'm sort of thinking my best choice are those Acer "it's almost a switch" boards (6311/6511).  Research suggests they have the exact lock key and, if you get an ANSI model, the right |\ and enter, in okay-quality dyesub.

The hardest part, surprisingly, is going to be the 1.25x Alt.  There's not much else you can substitute for it; you can use a spare left shift for Enter or a spare tab for |\ in a pinch... but pre-Winkey boards simply don't have other 1.25x keys in most cases.

Bump.

Part of me is saying "Just hold off for Matias' cap offering" but I worry that's going to be, with no ill intent, more closely matched to the layout options of Matias boards, which aren't quite the same
