Topre is most definitely a rubber dome, but it's not membrane backed - pcb is used instead. The spring is only used to achieve the capacitive coupling, it does not provide other mechanical functions, and all of the force and tactility is the responsibility of the dome itself (and slider, partially, to lower friction).

It has a lot of "feel" similar to that of a normal rubber dome keyboard..and that is because the part that gives it most of its feel is a rubber dome.  That is where all the tactility and resistance comes from...

At the same time, the slider and how the rubber dome and plunger work together all give a much more solid feel when you bottom out..as well as stability when you're pressing it down.  The keys also feel a bit more responsive because they activate before you bottom out..

Plus you get the Topre "thock"..

I guess you could call it the best rubber dome keyboard ever..But what does that mean?  Nothing...If someone wants to use that as some sort of put down, go ahead..Normal rubber dome keyboards and Topre, while similar, are still very different...I personally enjoy them a lot more than Cherry to type on...just as I enjoy Cherry more to game on because it has that very hard/mechanical/I can spam this feel..

Honestly the model m rubber dome just feels like a rubber done with a quasi-bottom out point to me. It helps that the board is kinda heavy but it doesn't change the feel of standard rubber domes a whole lot.

I use a Realforce 101 (35/45g) at work, and I compared it to the standard dell keyboards. The Topre, while rubber dome, is responsive and tactile (for the most part, the 35g keys are so light). They spring back nicely, have a more consistent feel, allow actuation without bottoming out, and are softer on bottom out. And they make a lovely thock sound while actuating.

I can't tell because i never really owned one, i only got to try them. My dad trades a lot of old macs, tablets and phone and stuff and sometime i get to try what he manage to find out in the classifieds. I have to say i have been impressed by some Apple Pro boards because they seriously feel made out of quality for a rubber matrice. The old model which USBs are on it's top sides (to connect a mouse) are really good (early 2000) and then came out the first fill white with a glass backpanel Apple Pro boards with 2 USBs interface on top (about 2003-2004 models) and are pretty nice to type with.

I totally understands but i mean as far as i know Topre switches fits a little more into mechanical category than rubber dome category. Since they are considered one appart of the other it would be a shame to say that Topre is part of the rubber dome category :/

It's not really properly defined but looking at the thread title, "Do Topre feel like the best rubber dome ever?", i would say no, because the "best rubber dome ever" in my opinion must be a keyboards that fits and only fits into the rubber dome category.

But this is only my opinion about some sort of loop hole because honestly, i'd say that best rubber dome keyboard that fits only into the rubber dome category is simply a Dell Quietkeys, and good Topre boards such as the HHKBv2 feels way better than usual rubber dome boards.

Some of the best rubberdomes like the Keytronic, Chicony, Dell's RD, while very tactile and almost not mushy, they still don't feel exactly like Topre's. The Topre, after overcoming the 'bump' on top, just collapses into emptiness. No resistance, and almost no spring pushing up against the finger. Because it's capacitive, and physically touching nothing, it slides smoothly as butter. Rubberdomes never behave like this. Actually I still kinda like the good rd's. Cheap and good enough for writing. Soft cushioning and springiness from the dome. Lasts a good few years, maybe a decade use.
But still, Topre is in a whole other league.

I may compare it to driving a Ford Focus mk1 or a Honda Civic EG6 to a Mercedes Benz S Class. Whole the former two are very good cars, with excellent road feedback and reliable. Still it doesn't roll as smooth as a Merc. Both are still excellent.

What sets Topre apart from the typical, cheap rubber dome keyboard is that Topre switches have actual sliding parts. The actual movement of the Topre switch relies on this sliding part, not the rubber, which makes for a much smoother feel, even over Cherry MX switches (because the sliding mechanism for Topre switches is cylindrical). The rubber in Topre switches only serve as the tactile bump; it's not the mechanism with which the Topre switch actually moves. With rubber domes, however, the movement and key action relies solely, and entirely on bending/rubbing the rubber, which is what gives it such a rough and unrefined movement.

All of the cheap (keyword "cheap") rubber dome keyboards that I've come across did not have sliding parts. I've never used a rubber dome board with sliding parts, so I can't say definitively, but I would assume there can still be differences in the quality of the mechanical parts (the sliding mechanisms), as well as the rubber, as well as the material used for the chassis. Case in point, my Topre board is studier, and its switches are smoother than my Filco with MX Browns, even with thick PBTs on the Filco (contrary to what t4tissue has said). Yes, I understand that MX Browns are naturally "scratchy", but what I mean by Topre switches being smoother is that they have much less wobble, whereas all Cherry MX switches, not just the MX Browns, have wobble (I've tried Reds and Blues). Also the Topre has sub-dyed PBT caps (not just regular PBTs), which I would also assume the other rubber dome boards, even with moving parts, won't have.

Oh, assumptions... I've just had my hands on a Cherry G83-something with thick PBT dyesubs; too bad the domes were crap. I own several other RDs with PBT dyesubs, some BTCs and a Preh Commander with MX-compatible sliders (even plate-mounted on the Preh) etc. There's nothing magical about Topre. It's just the only relatively common modern keyboard with domes that costs about $200 and most of that price is in actual hardware (incl. R&D or QC), not marketing or gimmicks. The important question is how does Topre age; what do vintage Topre keyboards feel like after some heavy use and abuse? How did they compare to their competition at the time? What will modern Topre keyboards feel like in a few years or decades?

That being said, I think it's a personal preference—"rubber dome over something" is a class of mechanisms just like "spring over membrane" or discrete mechanical switches; some people prefer tactile or even clicky switches, other like linears. When I tried an HHKB, it felt smooth and stuff, but very different from my BTC 51xx or the Preh, that are very strong on the rebound, creating yet another kind of tactility. I think the latter suits my current typing technique better.
