LED Lightning modes. Do you use them?
« on: Fri, 11 July 2014, 13:10:47 »
So I recently received my Ducky Shine 3 TKL in the mail, and spent a fair amount of time just playing around with the different LED modes the board offers.

Personally, I prefer a backlight even though i touch type. The different modes on the DS3 are definitely a cool conversation piece (everyone I showed thought it was awesome, even though they don't really know much about why the board itself other than the LEDs make it nice)

Does anyone else with either a DS3 or any other keyboard with LED lightning modes really use them daily?

I have to admit, it's fun to show off. Practical? Maybe not so much.

I always install them and make sure they're working, but leave them off.

Turn them on for some photos but honestly most boards look sexier when they're being modest.

when I had my DS3, the LED modes were nice to play around with for the first few days. and then the novelty wore out and I either just left the LEDs off or on low backlit settings. I found the other modes to be distracting while touch typing in the dark though. but yeah, not very practical - good to show off :thumb:

I have my DS3 LEDs set to low and have the keys go to full brightness when pressed, and fade back out. Other than that, I don't mess with it and really don't like the other settings.

Like RED-404, I use 'keypress on' mode where the LEDs are off but increase in intensity when pressed.

I'm waiting for someone to program 'trail mode' where it lights up your last few keystrokes..

Thats the setting I end up using the most too. The subtle fade in effect is really rather nice. Not too jarring like the other modes are for everyday use.

When I decided to buy a DS3 it took me a long time to decide whether I want orange or white LED. I now mainly use the different lightning modes to "show off" to my friends that are not too familiar with mechs. When Im alone I usually only use the reactive lightning mode.

My backlit keyboards don't get much use these days.  When I did use them regularly, I'd have the backlighting off during the day, and just plain on low setting during the night (with little extra light in the room).

Now, on the occasions when I do use one, I tend to use one of the fancy lighting modes.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
