WASD Custom Job - Color UV printing on black keys
« on: Thu, 17 July 2014, 20:18:45 »
Here is my WASD custom keyboard.  It's a CODE  w/ clears.  The keys are their standard customizable keycaps.  I created the design and uploaded the file with my order.  I'm generally very happy with the way it turned out.  The only two issues  are that the red and orange are too dark (my fault) and some of the printing is a little off center.

I broke one of the switches replacing the keycaps.  You can see the hole in some of the pics.  Don't forget to wiggle the keys when removing them - especially on clears, since they're so tight.  I'll eventually get around to unsoldering the switch and replacing it, but for now, here it is:

71305-0

71307-1

71309-2

71313-3

71315-4

71311-5

This is the original design for comparison:
71317-6

How long will they last under heavy typing?
I typed this post on my Slanck. I also developed a stronger, cleaner, easier handwiring method.

Interesting. I wonder if the technique works on PBT.

Personally I'm no fan of this style + the legends/fonts are hard to read. But if you like this kind of style  :thumb:

Ps. In your photo it looks as if the print has a height and you can feel them, is that correct ?
(Me is thinking to make keys with a texture to it by this method :D)

WASD Keyboards has only been using this printing method for about 6 months.  I think it will be another 6 at least before we will really know how durable it is.  They claim it's harder than abs, but that doesn't mean that it won't lose durability over time.  They do say that if the coating is chipped, it can flake off.  I guess we'll see :)

I don't mind it being hard to read - I already know where all the keys are :)

Yes, you can feel the printing.  It's comparable to other keyboards I've used where you can feel the print.    You could make textured keys with this method, but WASD also sells textured keys where the texture is molded into the plastic:
