Hello! I'm the dude with the awesome SSK find..
« on: Sat, 02 August 2014, 22:32:16 »
So I've been building my own computers for probably 10-11 years. I've always like doing things like that. I've always spent good money on headsets and mice, but I would always rock like $5.99 Lite-On keyboards. I thought, whats the point of a keyboard that costs 15x as much but does the same thing. I just couldn't bring myself to get one. Then last year for christmas my girlfriends father wanted to know what I wanted. He's a bit well off, last year he got me a 39" 1080p LCD TV. So I thought to myself, what could I possibly want that he would buy me from Best Buy? So I put down gaming keyboard and gaming headset. He ended up getting me the 2013 Razer Blackwidow. It has the MX Cherry Blues (unlike the 2014 which has like razer brand switches). I have loved the switch. Then a few months ago I found this IBM Model M SSK that I am typing on right now. I had no idea what I had found back then until a couple days ago when I was just doing some research on what it was worth. So now I am hooked. I am going to have the board bolt modded and cleaned/restored. Then who knows! I am loving it so far, no roommates have complained. But then again we all run mechanical boards.

Anyway, I've spent way to much time on this forum and a couple others in just a couple days. But I figured I would stop and introduce myself!

Welcome to Geekhack!

Great find!  SSK one of the few keyboards still on my "to buy" list.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
