How long will Corsair vengeance K70 last?
« on: Fri, 08 August 2014, 15:58:19 »
Hi guys, im about to buy myself my first mechanical keyboard corsair K70 RGB when it comes out. All im really worried about is how long will it last me and by that I mean how long do those cherry mx brown switches last? Do I have to worry about replacing them after 2 years or so? How about the "double letter" problems (likkke thisss) do they occur a lot or untill you spill something in the keyboard? Im planning to blow the dust off with canned air every week and doing some big cleaning every 3-6 months we will see. I hope you understand my concern since paying 169$ for keyboard is something crazy for me... have been using 5$ rubber dome keyboard for almost 5 years now. I dont mind reading essays so go on and write your mind off, will highly appreciate it :D. Thanks guys and sorry for my english/silly questions maybe? :)

Take care of it and it should be fine, the switches should outlast everything else with normal wear and tear.

The main problem with the K70 is that the LEDs kept dying. I have no idea whether this issue is addressed or not, but a quick google search should show you how common this problem was/is and whether it has been fixed.

On some forums the Corsair keyboards are often recommended. I think that is because they are available everywhere and they do a good job appealing to a gaming audience. You will find that people here are not as fond of them. People generally do not care for the look and the first generation of Corsair keyboards were a letdown to many because they were only partially mechanical and had some other technical issues.

With so many good brands and products out there, it is hard to recommend any keyboard that has had any sort of design or production issue whatsoever.

Im well aware of the led issues and the new RGB version should fix this completely wit their new RGB switches (hopefully), so I think the leds should be fine now.. after all im sure that corsair was tired of all those RMAs :D

Are you reffering to something exactly? Like keycaps falling off or something else? The main reasons I want this keyboard are: Exceptional look, RGB backlighting, really really great reviews on newegg and amazon (with complaints about LEDs but that should be fixed)

I would probably go for Ducky shine 3 but in my country there arent any. Only Logitech G710+ which has terrible reviews, CM quickfire TK where im scared about the cord issues and of the switching of numbers/arrows, CM quickfire ultimate same issues - cord and bad quality compared to TK version?  Then there are Tesoro durandal keyboards but not so many people seem to have it so i have no idea wheter they are good or not :(
Then there are filcos, but they cost 220$ and I just feel like giving so much money for such ugly looking keyboard with no backlighting is just not for me :( (Purely my opinion.. I know that many people love their design :) )

Soo yeah... :(

How long do you have the keyboard already? Do you take care about your keyboard alot? Or was it caused by spilling drink maybe? Aand one more question, does it happens alot? Thanks for answer :D

What's wrong with CM's cords? From what I've read everyone here has pretty high praise for there boards especially at the price. And mo one knows When the RGB's are gonna be released though, no point in waiting forever. IMO.

I heard since its unpluggable that there are problems with the keyboard unplugging itself sometimes and such... I guess it should be okay if you dont unplugg/plug like a crazy right :D ?
I atually dont mind the CM keyboards, but i kinda want arrows and numpad, not like 2 in one like its in the TK. Also no wrist rest and white backlit :/ I know that there is the quickfire ultimate for this matter, but i heard the build quality is much worse than on TK,rapid and such so :(

Corsair said they will release the RGB at the end of July, its already beginning of August but they should come soon..I will have money for the keyboard after 1-1.5 month anyways.

i used it lightly for about two months now. i have kinda fixed the problem by resoldering all the switches, in the meantime i clipped it's stabilzers. it's (the problem) surfacing now and then, but i'm switching boards soon so i don't really care.

i take care of my keyboard, no spills no nothing. this is with the exception of a light scratch on the volume wheel (i was digging out the plastic part to the right of it to access a hidden screw).

get a filco, it's worth every penny.

There used to be a problem with some keys repeating on their first generation of keyboards. I think they solved that in some firmware update. I remember there also being problems with updating the firmware (again, a google search on related terms would probably take you to complaints on the corsair forums).

However, I think they resolved all, or most of these issues by now.

The reason why you do not see them recommended here however, is that the brand as a whole just not has the same level of trust and history of reliability as many other brands of keyboards. They do make a good product, and I think there are plenty of reasons people would like them (for example, macro's on a mechanical keyboard is not something that you find very often). But you can see how keyboard enthusiasts would prefer other brands.

I honestly doubt we'll see it within 2 months, and no one can tell you how long it's gonna last, while it's designed off the K70, it's gonna have a new PCB and the first keyboard and the first with Cherry MX RGB switches.

Ok thanks guys for your opinions. So right now im thinking about the K70 rgb, Cm quickfire TK and CM quickfire rapid, are there any build quality differencies between TK and rapid? Also im a little bit scared of not having numpad, because i tried writting numbers without the numpad and i just misstype them alot. Im not sure if its because of my "weird" typing (i use all fingers on left hand but only one on right hand to type letters (if you count backspace, enter and such then its about 3 fingers).

Also what im scared of is the cleaning... on K70 they say its really easy due to the keycaps being higher so you just blow air trough it and done but the CM :/

Also what i find interesting is that most people say that K70 build quality is better than on CM rapid/tk and they also tend to pick K70 over CM alot... so im not sure whether its just because this page doesnt like corsair or the build quality is just simply same or a little bit different :D

Well at least now im sure that im picking from those 3 keyboards :) We are getting there! :D

I've had my K70 w/MX reds for a little over a year now.  Never blown out or cleaned, and no issues whatsoever.  It is a nice keyboard.

At the time of purchase I was still a keyboard noob, only having had experience with a Das Keyboard with Cherry blues and one with browns. The one with browns I had ordered with blank keycaps, and it was menacing looking.  But, when I did occasional gaming with it, you can understand that having no letters was a bit of a problem!   :-[    I also found myself not liking the "dirty" feeling of browns.  So, I went to find a replacement and wanted to try Cherry reds.

I will fully admit that I was enamored with the K70's LED-lit keys, and I also liked the idea of the handy volume wheel, because I play music off my machine a lot and adjust the volume a lot.  So, I went for it- and I still have almost no regrets.

That said, one thing that I did not consider (and you should) is whether or not you'll eventually want to tinker with third-party replacement keycaps, for a variety of reasons.  Maybe you'll never have a desire to do this, but I do now and my options are quite limited as far as a full replacement set, because of the non-standard bottom row spacing.  Top that off with the additional complication of finding replacement keycaps that allow the LED lighting to come through - that limits the options even further.

That's just something to consider.  Odds are you have an inner geek that will eventually want to hack your board- and the K70 isn't the best option there.

Thanks for reply, luckily i have no intention of investing into another keycaps, i was looking for full keycaps and prices were about 50-60$ + like 30-40$ shipping... that is just insane and im totally sure i wont change my mind :)

Im worried about red/browns/blues because i've never had the chance to try typing on any of them and i cant buy the sample kit, because it would cost me about 50$ with shipping and here in my country i didnt find any :/ I dont feel like buying reds just because i think it would feel too similiar to membrane and im not paying so much money for something so similiar to membrane, although i might be wrong about this. Then there are blues.... worried about them being harder to use for gaming and also the clicky sound... I myself find it somewhat sexy but the thing is for how long :D Also my parents would probably throw the keyboard out of the window after few strokes :D I hope the browns will be good for me :)

LOL!  Well, we definitely don't want your parents to throw your keyboard out the window!

I hear you on the replacement keycaps.  It can get excessive/obsessive quickly.

Not sure I would worry about the reds feeling like membranes - they don't.

I wish you had a way of trying different boards before purchasing - I wish I could too.  There are so many options!

Good luck!

get the cm rapid if you don't need the number pad. it's a much more solid choice over the k70. there's not much difference in build quality if any at all for the tk and rapid.

It should be totally fine, since they've addressed the LED dying issue. Don't worry about what others say, Corsair makes well-built boards with few flaws, all of which seem to be addressed in this revision. Most people just think they're too "mainstream" for the keyboard hipsters.

Hehe thanks guys for all your answers, I think I've decided for K70 RGB. Even though I ran into ducky shine 3 and I was pretty amazed by the lights... but then I was like... oh wait K70 RGB will be able to do that and also much more :D Although I would probably pick the ducky if I was able to find it somewhere in my country... because the build quality is just better :/

Now all I have to do is wait for the baby to release :)
