Where can I get an IBM original Model M UK layout, please?
« on: Sat, 09 August 2014, 13:46:24 »
Decided I wanted to go down the old original route. Not convinced about the Unicomp substitutes. I remember typing on that old heavy weight mechanical one years ago and thought it would be better than the dome one I have on my desk at present.

It has to be a UK layout, only.

Thanks

Shouldn't be too hard to find. I don't know ISO model numbers, but the plant in Greenock, Scotland, churned out a bunch of them.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

You could get one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141342410913 and then adapt it via a Soarer's.

They pop up fairly often on UK eBay, maybe 5 a month or more. The trick is sometimes to find what descriptions they are listed under. In my recent experience they seem to hit about the £50-60 mark, RJ45 terminal ones you can find with a little patience for £20-30 plus postage, fairly clean.

Here is one that is presently up that shouldn't need a soarer converter.

You can also convert a "standard" model M keyboard to ISO layout very easily if you can only find ANSI ones.

Thank you for your help.

Some great ideas there. I have put in a bid on the old school one with the adaptor attached.

Not willing to pay over the odds for postage from Aiya Napa for that one. Also not willing to pay for the RJ45 cable one as my electronics skill is limited and fiddling around with an RJ45 adaptor cable in the hope it will work with a modern USB port computer is really beyond me, as I'm not sure I could get the parts.

What amazes me is how MUCH these keyboards are going for on Ebay! If I'd know this, I'd have grabbed a few from my old office years ago (they had loads in a cupboard - the only keyboard to cope with seriously hard typing) and flogged them on Ebay.

the only keyboard to cope with seriously hard typing

That's one reason why they go for so much now.

How would you do such a thing? Soarers?

I got an Model M ISO DE layout and enough caps to switch it to UK ( I think). Let me know if you're interested. I'm from Romania so pretty close (relatively).
