Heya
« on: Wed, 27 August 2014, 08:39:42 »
Kind of new to this whole mechanical keyboard thing. I'm planning on buy a WASD v2 keyboard soon. Still thinking if I'm getting a Leopold keycap set or keeping the ABS keycap set sold with the keyboard.
Coming from a rubber dome world I'm not sure the ABS keys will bother me much and I can always change them later I guess.

Anyway! Hi! ;D

The fun thing about WASD boards is that you can buy them without keycaps and then buy the keycaps you do want to stick on the board. Options are always good (and confusing)!

Welcome! What switches do you plan on getting?

The stock ABS caps with a V2 aren't all bad. They could be better, could be worse. I have a few custom made caps from WASD and I think the quality is pretty good. The caps that come with the CODE, which are back light compatible - now those are horrible! But most back light compatible caps are.

Yeah I'm not planning on a LED backlit keyboard. I just want something I can use at work and looks professional.
I'm thinking brown but I've never felt the difference. I've watched videos and I definitely don't want the blue swtiches but I still want a tactile bump.

Thanks for the welcome!

Perhaps you'd enjoy Clears? Check those out :)

I don't have very strong hands. Are they very different from the clear switches?

They're pretty heavy. I prefer heavier switches personally. Perhaps modified clears would suit your tastes then. Poke around the forums and see if they seem intriguing to you :).

I've used browns at work before, they were pretty quiet, which was nice. Not the switch for me though, they were too light and didn't provide enough feedback. I got the CODE with clears and that I found to be much more enjoyable, but it isn't nearly as quiet as the board with browns. Blues can be rough in a quiet office setting, and I didn't think I would like the switch at all,  but after using them for a bit I do really like them. If someone complained because of the noise I'd swap it out, of course. But so far no one seems all that bothered.

You could always look into a switch tester to get a sample of everything, that is a great place to start. Good luck!

Do you think clears with o-rings would do the trick? And is it really more tiring than the browns or you avoid bottoming out?

I always bottom out. Doesn't matter what I type on. I don't know how people stop themselves from doing it.

Clears are heavier that the browns for sure. I swap between two different systems all day long, one has a Poker II with blues, and the other the CODE with clears. I do find that if I have to do really long typing sessions - like if I'm writing documentation or something, it is easier on the blues. But, if you could type on the clears without bottoming out, that would change significantly reduce the fatigue.

Even though they might require a little more pressure, I do like heavier switches. I typed on a Model M for years and never even considered that the switches were tiring. I didn't really consider the clears heavy until I got used to the blues. I've never used o-rings. I'm sure it would help cut down on the noise of me constantly bottoming out though. Seriously, it is so impressive that people can type without smashing the key into the desk. I'll never understand it!
