Hi everyone, and a question if i may.
« on: Sun, 07 September 2014, 13:51:19 »
Hello everyone,

I found out today about this forum because i also found out today that Ergodox exist and i can't be more happy about it, and on The Ergodox website there is a link to here. Overall i think i'm going to spend a lot of time on Geekhack.

May be it might be a little too soon for me to ask a question but i was wondering if, you buy an Ergodox kit or i you just built a custom keyboard, is it possible to have the keyboard layout change automatically if open a game or an application? Like if i launch a game the keys layout automatically sets itself the way i need it to be (from a config i would have created for this game) and if i exit the game it goes back to default ?

Anyway, glad to be here,

Cheers!

Welcome to Geekhack!

Most layouts are defined in the firmware, with some sort of utility running on the PC to remap keys as required.  I guess it would be possible to remap the entire keyboard, but wouldn't it be easier just to change the game config?

Anyway specifically about the ErgoDox, if you don't get any responses here, maybe have a look at the Quick Questions thread, or even make a post in the keyboards section itself.  There are quite a few ErgoDox enthusiasts around here :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

You might be able to have an FN layer dedicated to a "gaming" layout.
If you get MX Lock switches, then that would definitely be possible.

I don't know if you can do anything to change layouts based on software detection.
