Hi there!
« on: Mon, 08 September 2014, 16:27:52 »
Stumbled across /r/MechanicalKeyboards/ and now I must have one!

I've never played many computer games (sigh) and will likely only be using it for typing, so I'm looking to go with some MX cherry blues.  I really like the look of the poker II and am angling to buy one off BangGood ASAP (unless anyone knows of any other way of sourcing one from within the UK).

I just saw a beautiful modified poker II on reddit [http://imgur.com/a/Xhz1a]and was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of those key caps?

Thanks!

PS How many of you bought a keyboard without a backlight and regretted their decision?
Thanks!

Welcome to Geekhack!

You want a /r/MechanicalKeyboards? :p

I have keyboards with and without backlighting, and regret none of them!

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thanks for this.  I'm sure anything that I chose to go for would be a huge step up.  My fear is that given my limted funds I will beunlikely to purchase more than one keyboard for the foreseeable future and really want to make it count!  Imagine you only got to buy one keyboard, would having be happy buying a poker II PBT without backlights?

Cheers!

I'm currently going to be moving from backlit to non-backlit.  I just ended up buying a desk lamp as well to offset the lack of lights in the future.  But I don't prefer one or the other so having them wasn't that big of a deal for me.  If you like the aesthetic of lights the poker II I believe can come with lights or no lights.

You really should go to a store and try before buying if you have limited funds. Personally I like blues (and clears, greens and reds...), but you might like others better.

As for the Poker, I have one coming myself, but I don't know I'd get it as my only keyboard. It has a very different layout, especially the missing arrow keys can be annoying for many. If thats not a problem for you the poker is a very nice board.

The biggest two decisions are layout and switch.

The Poker is a 60% layout, and does not have dedicated arrow keys nor function keys.  If you can live without those, it is a fine keyboard.

The second id switch, and no-one can really tell you which switch you prefer.  I started with MX blues and reds, and ended up finding them way too light.  Now I prefer MX blacks or greens.  Or buckling spring.  Or Topre, although my HHKB is only 45g, and I have a feeling I would prefer 55g Topre.
