Looking for keyboards with non-M-style matrices
« on: Mon, 22 June 2009, 12:14:18 »
Hi there,

is anyone with keyboards with non-M-style matrices willing to open them up and take some pictures?
If you supply the pictures, I'll do a matrix trace. I'm only interested in keyboards without an M-Style matrix and without NKRO; I already did a trace on an m-style board and nkro matrices are boring and uninteresting.

So, what do I need?

- Highres pictures of the actual PCB where all traces are clearly visible. If you can't fit it on one picture, make several overlapping pictures so they can be stitched together.
- A picture of the front of the board so I get to know where all the keys are located.
- If it's a membrane matrix, pictures of both layers would be really great, which makes tracing much easier.

If you have what I need, write me and I'll give you my e-mail address or upload it somewhere and give me the link. It's important the image quality is as good as possible, so no unneccesary compression to keep down the file size should be employed. It's best to take the pictures straight from the camera.

What can you press simultaneously when trying QWAS?
If you can supply me with pictures, though, I'd be happy nonetheless. Pictures of board PCBs are fine even if they don't happen to have interesting matrices.

1996 vintage 102-key G80-3000 with old-style Cherry matrix:
Back side of board, upside down [4.8 MiB - pic straight out of camera]
Yep, that's quite some flux on there. Have some more pics if required.

Looks interesting!
The PCB picture's quality is just slightly lacking, making it quite hard to effectively figure out where everything is connected to. I'll have to make more assumptions than neccesary. Do you have slightly larger pictures?

Still looking for PCB shots of various keyboards, by the way.

I asked this in another thread, not sure if you've seen it: Why do you do this?

I'd just like to chip in and say I'm disappointed with the M-style matrix. On my Unicomp Customizer you can't for example hold down both Control keys and get either Shift key to register. This has implications for anyone using Autohotkey wanting to turn a key into a Fn modifier (like Ripster's HHKB emulator or my Squeezeboard script.)

Maybe this is a criticism of all keyboards without N-key rollover, but until now I assumed the modifier keys were guaranteed to work. Silly me.

LCtrl + RCtrl + LShift does work for me, but with RShift it doesn't (1931403). Guess I'd never have noticed.

Ah - the Windows and menu keys on mine are probably hogging valuable positions.

I guess when compromises are being made, the ability to use both Control keys (or both Shift keys) is not a high priority.

Here's a 1993 G80-3000HAD / 10 PCB in 3 shots. As it doesn't make any use of the integrated wire bridges for the most part, tracing shouldn't be too hard I hope.

First time I used this camera, didn't get the white balance right nor the focus...

Indeed, that's a remarkably bad picture for a DSLR. ;) Actually it doesn't even show the matrix...

Good place in my opinion, I wish they could place that little domed flag underneath the keycap to.

Not sure if you're still interested, but here's the DASIII.

P.S. It has diodes on the other side. Can't photograph, the switch mounting plate hides that side.
