  • Missed another sale.
Novatouchs are out there, and people are buying them.  Reviews are generally positive.  Here's hope for more sales, and maybe eventually a 55g version!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I hope they come out with another form factor but I really doubt it. :(

It's indeed present and it seems to come from the way the secondary key cap stems rest on the stabilizers while at the same time not making proper contact. The degree to which it will bother you will be proportional to your level of CDO.

I did hear something about stabilizer rattle though.

I have a novatouch to review and I did a thorough disassembly and photoshoot.

The stabs do rattle some but are actually the exact same design as on a realforce. With some testign, I was able to determine the level of stab rattle is the same on either.

Congrats on your purchase! I plan to get one as well.

I thought this was the case as well, but it is actually caused by the stab wire being a little too small for its channel. Again, I have verified this after a thorough disassembly. Having different keycaps shoudl decrease this somewhat.

I'm holding off until they figure out the stabilizer issue.  Two of my $150 Topre Typeheavens with ABS keycaps have quieter stabilizers than the $245 Realforce 87U Silent I had.  Wtf!

It's not a issue since I don't have the keyboard anymore.  However, if I did I would disagree with you.  Maybe on your $80 CM Storm or Ducky Zero I might agree - but anything over $200 - and especially one that emphasizes being "Silent" and they need to do a better job at QC.

You are right.  The Chinese made Topre has more attention to detail.

I don't know exactly what you mean by that "buckwheat" comment, but I did not mean to imply that the novatouch has more attention to detail than the topre. Nor did I mean to imply that it has less.

The stabilizer rattle is caused by the stabilizer wire being smaller than the channel it sits in. This is true for both the novatouch and my realforce 10'th anniversary 30g. The stabilizers are exactly the same design and it's entirely possible that they were both manufactured in the same plant in japan. In any case, their build quality is the same as the design. The Novatouch case is not as good as the realforce case, but is a lot nicer than most chinese plastic keyboard cases.

Hence the stabilizer issue is a design issue rather than a QC issue. Having better QC will not fix it. I can't comment on the design of the TypeHeaven as I don't own one, and haven't opened it up to look.

Also, I don't consider price to be a factor at all in the discussion. The price is a combination of several factors: prototyping costs, manufacturing costs, and efficiency of the process, as well as other factors. At the "high end" of mechanical keyboards, the market that CMstorm is targeting with the novatouch, I consider the quality of design as a whole without regard to price. If the design is above my par, and the price is within my budget, then it would behoove me to buy. Otherwise, some "expectation" of perfection, at a certain price point is irrelevant to the discussion.

Now, if you would like to have a discussion over my philosophy, or my opinions about pricing structures, the cost of bringing a product to market, or if pricing concerns should affect your perceived value of a product, or the degree to which price should come into the evaluation of slight design flaws, That is an excellent discussion to be had in another topic. If you just want to whine and complain about expensive things and how they aren't good enough for you, I suggest you voice it elsewhere.

Not whining about expensive things - just pointing out the stabilizers on the Topre TypeHeaven are superior to Topre boards that are $50+.

You may get PBT - but we get quiet stabilizers - FROM THE FACTORY!  (who knew?)
