Now that Noppoo Choc Mini's aren't being sold anymore...
« on: Wed, 22 October 2014, 09:33:10 »

What are some quality alternatives? One of the features I loved about the Choc Mini's among other things was the switch lock to swap capslock with control. I'd love to find another similar keyboard equal in quality.

Kind regards,

There's always the HHKB or Realforce boards.

you cant swap capslock / control on all of them. For example, mine does not have that option.

Bummer, it looks like they did away with a lot of the things I love about the Choc Mini. Why stop making such an excellent product. :\

IIRC the RF comes with a different caps/ctrl

at least, mine did

Kind regards,

You can map CapsLock to CTRL via software, and do many interesting things with software too.

So, unless you plan on plugging the keyboard into computers that are not your own,
you might be able to relax the CapsLock <-> CTRL requirement of your KB search :)

For example:

I modified the "dvorak internatial layout" in linux by editing XKB data files, to tweak the symbol layer (better shortcuts for ñ  ¡ ¿ and °C and so on for spanish), and to have no dead keys but at the same time having Right ALT be a regular ALT, instead of AltGR, so that I could still do Alt+F4 with the right alt and more.

I also turned the Menu key into a Right Super key (win key), unless depressed together with SHIFT. Useful for the Razer TE keyboard:    Menu -> RWin,   SHIFT+Menu -> Menu.

Though for just swapping CapsLock and CTRL, Linux KDE's control panel allows you to do that by UI with a single click.
My mappings were a bit lower level, so I haven't used that control panel section (I have mapped CapsLock -> ESC directly in my edited layout).

There is also KeyTweak for windows, that changes the KB mapping in the registry, and allows you to revert it back to how it was too.

I seem to remember that there was some microsoft tool one could use to create custom KB layouts also.

I'm not a Mac user so I can't recommend anything for Mac, but I'm sure that there is software for KB mapping there too.

The advantage of mapping at the software level, is that it will work with any keyboard that you plug in :)

Cheers!

Please excuse my noobness, but what exactly is the massdrop site? They only sell once a certain amount of people want the item?

Thanks!

I'll check out the windows program you mentioned. I have tried some in the past but the ones I tried (I don't remember their names) required a reboot in order to switch back and forth. That's where the beauty of the key toggle comes in handy. ;)

Thanks!

Indeed, KeyTweak does require a reboot for the changes to be applied. They will stay applied forever until you go and change them back.
Any mapping software for windows that works by rearranging the scancode map in the registry will require a reboot. Some other programs work in a different way, you might have luck with other programs.

Cheers!

For anyone still looking for one of these keyboards I just recently purchased and received mine from this vendor. It took about 35 days to receive it (shipping vendor change or something) but I got it and it was brand new as advertised.
