modifying OEM profile to match cherry profile?
« on: Sat, 08 November 2014, 12:09:14 »
Hi everyone, I just picked up some cherry profile keycaps that I really like, but I have two OSX keycaps from WASD that I would really like to use with the set.

From what I can tell, if I just cut down the internal stem a little bit on the keycap, I could make the height match the cherry height.

Has anyone tried anything like this before?

I don't think that's quite how it works

Technically it might work, but it is a one way trip.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

um

isn't the angle of the cap different?  cherry profile is steeper right?

that means you would need to cut off the stem and reglue it at a different angle.

then you would have to make sure the bottom edges of the cap aren't hitting things at weird angles?

If the angle matches the row you want to use them on and if the stem hole is deep enough and if the bottom edge doesn't hit anything when pressed all the way down then that could work. Otherwise you need to cut off the stem, shorten it and glue it in at a different angle and possibly trim the bottom edge of the keycap too. Lots of work to get a custom cap to match profile, but it may be worth it to you. Also, the outside angles of the cap may not matche the surrounding ones as OEM tend to have steeper sides than Cherry.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.
