Ione Scorpius M10 owners - question for you (key heights)
« on: Sat, 25 July 2009, 12:27:52 »
I made a post about this in another unrelated thread, but since it is starting to bother me I thought I'd make a dedicated post:

I recently got an M10 and noticed that different keys are different heights, but there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it.  Here are some strange discrepancies I have noticed:

1. The row of keys with ZXCV is raised up higher than the row of keys with the spacebar, but the left shift key is raised up higher than any other key in its row. The right shift key isn't raised up any higher than any other key in its row.

2. The delete, end, and page down keys are set so low that the tops of the keys are almost flush with the case of the keyboard.

3. The F1 key is set slightly higher than F2, F3, and F4.

4. The left CTRL key is set lower than any other key in its row (including the right CTRL key).

Does anyone else have this problem with their M10?  I tried pressing down on keys to make sure they were on all the way, but none of the keys budged so I assume they were on tight.  Are these height differences deliberate or a result of very poor QC? Either way, I don't like them. I don't mind if each row is a little bit higher than the previous one (i.e. the AT101W or Model M) but making individual keys in a row higher than others is messed up.

Ugh - that sounds strange since you would think plastic molds should be consistent unless they messed up the X well the key fits into.

One other check - have you tried removing the keys and putting a straightedge across the switch tops?

Unfortunately the blank Filcos won't fit the M10 either (at least some of the bottom row keys).

Good idea - I need to get a key puller though.

With the number of keyboards you're collecting a key puller would be a good idea.  Buy two, I'm always misplacing one.  Elitekeyboards seems to be the cheapest place right now.

Do you need 2 key pullers to remove the spacebar and other large keys?

Not really - I do though with Cherry switches because those stablizers are fussy.

The IBM M folks around here pull keys with their teeth.  I just find keypullers a lot more convenient for those inner keys and with two piece IBM keys especially.

Wait - are you saying it's possible to pull the spacebar off a Cherry switch using only 1 keypuller?  Do the ends of the keypuller really stretch out that far?

Oops.  Just ran across this oldie post.  You're not alone.

The M10 is slightly inconsistent, but I don't think it really makes it any more difficult to type on.

The only difference that bothers me is the lower than normal left CTRL key.  I use it for crouch in my games and holding it down when it is that much lower than the other keys is a pain.

I've never needed a keypuller with Cherry switches, only Alps.

As far as the original question, yeah, there's some noticeable variation in key height.
