Will we ever see a standard layout TKL in Matias switches?
« on: Sat, 29 November 2014, 06:39:12 »
I was just wondering if we would ever see a standard layout tkl in Matias switches.

Also, is there any effect to lubing quiet click switches?

This is my first post as well.

Now that the parts exist to do it, I’m guessing it’ll happen (maybe some kind of PCB/plate that supports both Alps/MX switches), but I’d also guess that Matias themselves won’t sell one directly.

But who knows.

There seems to be some support for a TKL-layout keyboard in the MassDrop Infinity project, as one example:

Yes, but I don’t know of anyone who’s written any detailed guide or review, so you’ll have to do some experimenting.

Supposedly KBParadise is looking at the V60MTS and trying to decide if they want to do a version of their tenkeyless board with them.

I don't know of any other firm than Matias themselves using the switches though.

Ironically Matias Alps might have had more immediate acceptance had Cherry's patents not expired.  With the fear of lawsuits from cloned switches and dwindling switch availability - this new Alps might have found more companies to pick it up.

During the MX “heyday” in the 80s and early 90s, there were dozens of reasonable keyswitch choices, including a dozen different Alps-inspired switches of one sort or another, and at least a couple Cherry MX clones.

I really don’t think patents have much to do with the current state of MX or Matias switches.

I tend to think the availability of keycaps also holds the alps back currently.

KBP says on their Facebook page that they are working on a 80% TKL that will support both Matias and Cherry switches. The prototype should be out in a few weeks.
TMK Alps64 w/ Matias Quiet Switches in KBP V60 case.
Infinity60 with SKCM Orange Switches w/ TMK.
CM Storm QRF w/ Frosty Flake controller, Cherry MX Blue Switches and TMK firmware.

Coming:
Ellipse Model F F62.
