Hello from Greece
« on: Fri, 05 December 2014, 11:19:01 »
Hi Geek hack i have been lurking on your forums for quite some time now.

It is finally the time to make myself an account and start posting, i fell in love with mechanical keyboards by randomly looking at a video on youtube from white fire dragon. I currently own 2 mechanical keyboards one filco majestouch ninja with mx browns which i bought from Japan as a impulse buy (to my regret should have gotten the mx blacks), i also have one Cherry G 80 with mx blacks which i love but the size is a bit too much for my liking, and finally i have a buckling spring Ibm model (m?) 1393285. I haven't modified anything as of now but I will when i have some spare cash and time.

I am  still in the phase of anything i see i want. But from my little experience the filco build quality seemed  sturdy with no give what so ever so i am sort of leaning towards another filco tkl, i heard that the Ducky kbd are outstanding, so i might have to give them a go. Do you have any recommendations for mx black boards other than the pcb diy types ?

The ibm was a dumpster dive board (one mans trash is another mans treasure) gave it a  thorough clean it is in pristine condition now everything is working my only gripe was that the v cap was missing :D

ahh, yes filcos are generally pretty good build quality! if you like the TKL format, you have plenty of options.
I don't know what you can get over there, but a favourite of mine is the KÛL ES-87 - which I only have tried for a shorter while, but it's super solid from what I could tell. I think it looks better than the Filco too. ;)
another filco is not a bad option though, and I believe they are a bit cheaper too.
ducky are nice too of course, but I don't have enough experience to recommend them. their cheaper models didn't impress me that much, though.

Sick find on the dumpster IBM. Love those greek legends.
I moved from filco, to kbt, to korea customs. Can't beat the feel of that custom board. :)
I tried about 7 stock boards with different switches and layouts before i landed on
heavier mx greens for my switch preference,
and 75% or lightsaver 1800 for layout
and i gotta have a board with clears or blacks for when I don't feel like clicking.

Korean customs are a dream to us mere mortals with no luck in finding vendors that are willing to sell to europe. Anywho i have given up on th ducky keyboards due to the abundance of bad reviews i have seen. Filco all the way it is then unfortunately the only supplier here seems to be keyboardco. Hopefully i can find someone willing to part with their Filco tkl in mx black on the forums. As for my current filco once i changed the keycaps it seemed a bit better.

thank you all for the warm welcome. The things in greece mechanical keyboards wise are a bit bleak only mass produced corsairs and razers here everything has to be imported or bought from other countries inside europe

Welcome to Geekhack!

You can sometimes find individual replacement Model M keycaps on eBay, or from Unicomp.  eBay ones might be more expensive, but Unicomp shipping might also be more expensive.

And if you find yourself liking the feel of the Model M, you can consider Cherry MX green switches - they are the closest MX switch to buckling spring.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
