Filco Minila vs. Ducky Mini YOTH
« on: Tue, 09 December 2014, 08:16:45 »
Having trouble deciding between these two:

http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1049
http://www.amazon.com/Majestouch-MINILA-Linear-Keyboard-FFKB67ML/dp/B00BG0ZR7Y/

Both are Cherry MX Black (supposedly), both compact.

Advantages of Flico:
*$50 cheaper
*Arrow keys are separate
*Has extra USB port
*Filco build quality may be superior? I've heard some complaints about the Ducky w/ Cherry MX Blue switches feeling mushy, and been concerned they may not be using authentic switches. Can't find anything specifically about the Black switches, though
*All black look is sleek

Advantages of Ducky:
*Backlit
*Has ability to control mouse pointer with WASD keys
*Cable attachment may be more secure
*Has a horse on it
*Comes with keychain

Thoughts?

The Minla isn't as compatible with aftermarket keycaps which should probably be considered (spacebar row caps mainly). The layout of the zxcv row is offset by an extra 0.25 unit as well which might throw off your typing until you get used to it.

No comments about the Ducky, I've never seen/used one but it looks like a relatively standard 60% backlit board.

I can't find it on rededit but someone put a complete set of Row 3 Nuclear SA on their Manila without issues ...

They used the right shift key for the space bar.  It looked pretty cool!

Apparently the YOTH comes with a ducky keychain and I really want it.
Could I buy it off you? Please. Maybe?   :-[

Well, couldn't decide, so I just bought both.

I like the way you think. I always preferred the layout of the miniLA. Mine was a tank, survived 4 OJ spills before I sold it.

I sold it because I didn't use it, not because I didn't like it.

Please post a comparative review of both and let us know which one you prefer :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Not every computer has bluetooth compatibility. Some people also just don't like wireless keyboards

I have to admit - when I first saw the Manila I thought WTF worst layout ever .. but after seeing all these nice keycaps on it I've changed my tune.

Just curious, why didn't you opt for the Bluetooth USB version (the Minila Air)?

I actually looked at the Filco bluetooth version a while back, and while it said it could hold connection profiles for three different devices, it doesn't let the user choose the device. It will automatically connect to the oldest paired device, which I think is pretty terrible. I ended up buying a Logitech k810 at that time, which would let me choose any of 3 paired devices. Unfortunately, the Logitech had problems with repeating key presses, and I couldn't put up with it since I do a lot of things on the linux command line. It got frustrating quick, and I returned it.

Upon reading recent reviews of the Filco bluetooth version, I found someone experienced that same problem with repeated key presses, which makes me wonder if it's a problem with bluetooth in general.

I have several computers with bluetooth, and I'd love the convenience of switching back and forth with a good mechanical bluetooth kb, but unfortunately it seems there are those above mentioned issues that I can't work around.

In the end, the USB version will suit me better for simple reliability, not to mention it will work at POST and allow entry into BIOS as well as when booting certain live discs/images. That's something bluetooth cannot do.

Fair enough. The bluetoith version has USB too
But I guess if you don't plan on ever using the Bluetooth, there's no point in buying the Air

If the bluetooth version has USB, then that's a serious failure on the part of Filco and those that reviewed it to never mention it.

http://www.keyboardco.com/blog/index.php/2013/10/filco-minila-air-bluetooth-keyboard-review/

For the diatec link, under "Interface", it says bluetooth. No mention of USB. Also no picture of any USB port on the keyboard. For the keyboardco review link, also no mention of USB functionality or any picture of a USB port on the keyboard.

So I made the best decision I could with the information I was able to obtain. Keep that eye roll **** to yourself.

No, I've just been on the internet too long to retain patience for arrogant condescending jerkwads and pathological liars (and there are far too many liars on the internet). If you had actually bought a Minila Air for $88 (lie), you would know it does not support USB.

And you meant your initial eye roll, which I considered disrespectful and rude, and then trying to weasel out of it with another lie just shows you lack character.

So in summary, yes, please stay out of my thread.

To everyone else, I will see about doing a comparison of the two boards soon.

Just because someone didn't get their facts straight does not give you the right to back hand them telling them that they are wrong.

To me, the eye roll doesn't even look like the kind of satirical patronizing eye roll that one would usually make.
It honestly to me looks like a smiley that has been struck by something peculiar, like a sort of confusion.
After a bit of stalking on Sygaldry's previous posts, I can clearly see that he or she for that matter had no idea what that smiley's actual purpose was.

I am wondering about this as well.
How the heck would it be able to charge without some sort of wired connection to something? Not like anything would ever rely solely on Qi.
A USB charging solution that doubles as a wired connection to your PC would make sense to me.
Perhaps it doesn't have anything and it runs off of batteries. Either way, we need some hard evidence.

Dude, I was trying to be civil but you are seriously pushing my buttons.

No, I did not mean the initial eyeroll, but thanks for teaching me that there is an eyeroll emoticon on this forum.

Now that I know what it is, I can use them excessively where I see fit.

Also, at this rate no one will want to see your comparison of the two boards because like you said, no one likes a "jerkwad".

Ask anyone who has bought anything from NCIX. Their prices are in CAN dollars.
83919-083921-1

Note I pricematched NCIXUS price to NCIX Canada and they accepted.

Google convert 101 CAN to USD and you get 88 dollars USD.

I've purposely left my order number in the pictures so you can go online and check the status yourself.

If I'm a pathological liar then I'm out of character in posting something that's true; yes, I bought a Minila Air for 88 dollars brand new.

Life tip: baseless accusations are never appreciated.

Out of curiosity, why wasn't the KBT Pure Pro an option?

The only real difference I can find is a slightly different fn layout and you trade the ability to swap out the space bar for the feature of being able to reprogram the board and key layout hardware-side. Well, that and IMO the Pure Pro's casing is much, much cleaner looking than the Filco's.

-edit-
That is, in context of the Minila. There's a good number of differences between it and the Ducky Mini; but I'd still argue that the Pure Pro is simply a more feature-rich board overall, unless of course bezels(and a more feature-rich LED feature) are your thing.
