Are all beige ones the "one's that aren't really PS/2"?

I have this exact keyboard.
It is PS2 connection.
Although they have a version with SGI's proprotary sqaure connection.

Before buying you may want to check the serial numbers.  Not all are compatible.

Technically they're model numbers, not serial numbers, but the message is otherwise correct.

The SGI proprietary port looks just like PS/2, so a functional visual inspection won't be good enough.

BTW, I inquired with the seller about which kind of keyboard this is.

They use dampened, tactile, non-clicky Alps.  Basically, they are the dampened version of the Dell AT101.  Other than the dampers, they are the same switch.

What exactly do the dampers do?  What is there effect on the key's action?  Do they make it require more force to press?

If you look at the pics on this page, the dampers are the black, rubber, dog-bone looking things on the side of the slider.  This creates a soft, silent landing as the switch is bottomed/topped out.  Instead of the loud clack you mormally get with an Alps switch, you get a nice, quiet landing.  There are some sound clips in the sound clips forum of damped Alps (specifically, the SGI).

Is there an easy way to tell this?

yes, it's smaller and has notched edges at the back

I recall the Indigo keyboard looking different than the AT101 so I don't think you have to worry about that.  There's probably more information over at the nekochan.net forum
