What do you do for fun?
« on: Fri, 31 July 2009, 03:54:47 »
This is an offshoot of the what do you do for a living thread.

Things I love to do that are fairly well known around here:

I write short stories and screenplays.
I love playing with my son.
And I study logic and Taoism in my free time.

Other things I enjoy are minimalist living, taking long walks at night, cooking (I cook 95% of the meals at our house) and I am a huge movie buff.

What are your favorite things to do?

What do I do for fun?  Cater to all YOUR whims, of course!  ;)

I enjoy motorcycling, martial arts, and constantly re-architecting anything and everything.  (I can never leave well-enough alone...whether that be my home network, music collection, bookshelf, keyboard storage, my demo lab(s), etc)

I play disc golf (competitively).  That's pretty much all I have time for.  I have a game room in the works with a dart board, and I am looking to add a fooseball table.  I also have a pretty nice home theater for movie/TV watching.  These days, though, I pretty much spend any free time I have playing disc golf (except at night when I do those other things).

That, and I drink.

I started sprint canoeing in May:

That's on my first day still thinking it would be easy. I didn't leave that spot that day. Fell about a hundred times into the water since then.

It's better now.

Maybe because of this quote:

Lowpoly,
Did you build that canoe yourself?  Right now I am in the middle of building my own 19' sea kayak.  Never worked with wood, thought it would be fun, and so far it has been a very rewarding experience.  Absolutely beautiful, and light as a feather.

Other than that I teach Aerobics.

Not in any particular order:

 • Writing fiction
 • (and, I suppose, reading)
 • Long-distance running
 • Chess (if anyone wants to play, I'm "megarat" on Gameknot.com)
 • Video/computer games
 • (The three best games in the history of humanity are, in chronological order:  Go, Chess, and Doom)
 • Amateur astronomy/astrophotography
 • Music -- active listening and playing bass guitar
 • Watching movies
 • Wife and 1.2-year-old son
 • If this isn't ultra-lame, aspects of my work should probably be considered a hobby, given how much time I spend on them

Lets see in order of where I spend the most time:

 • Spend time with my kids (girl 6, boy 7) not so sure I would call it all fun though.
 • Programming and learning all kinds of programming related stuff.
 • Reading mostly escapism nothing heavy and primarily SF. Right now I'm reading the last two books in the Honor Harrington series.
Dabble in other stuff to but those are the biggest time sinks.
Keyboards
Topre Capacitive: Realforce 87U, Realforce 86U, HHKB Pro 2, Topre MD01B0, Topre HE0100, Sun Short Type, OEM NEO CS (x2), NISSHO Electronics KB106DE
Buckling Spring: IBM Model M Space Saver (1291472), Unicomp Customizer x 2
Cherry Brown: Filco FKBN87M/EB, Compaq MX11800
Black Alps: ABS M1
Not so great boards Rare Spring over dome OKI, Sun rack keyboard

Trackballs - Trackman Wheel (3), Trackman marble (2)
Keyboards I still want to get - Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2 the White version, Realforce 23U number pad in black and maybe white, μTRON ergo board with Topre switches.
Previously owned - SiiG MiniTouch (White Alps), Scorpius M10 (Blue Cherry), IBM Model M13

Count me in right here.  My upright Tempest was recently discussed in the "Computing Setup Pics" thread, along with my sordid past with game collecting.

I have an HTPC with almost every emulator and ROM known to mankind (including MAME, obviously) hooked to my projector. I'd love to build a custom cabinet, but I'm lazy and this is good enough. I have a couple of Namco arcade pads running over USB to the box, to get that extra "arcadey" feel.

I am definitely an arcade lover.  I grew up in arcades.  However I never got out of it.  Around the time I stopped going to arcades, emulators started getting good enough to reliably reproduce the games :-D

I just can't stop playing fighting games.

But I have abandoned my arcade roots a bit.  I have 3 arcade sticks but still end up playing just about everything on keyboard.  Once I got used to using the keyboard for fighting games, I have a lot of trouble using anything else.  Nothing else feels as precise.

The pros go up to 18.5km/h (about 11.5mph) in a 200m race. Didn't find many timed race results. They are said to be meaningless for comparison as wind conditions have a high influence on the results. At least that's what I read. I, of course, am much slower.

No, this is a Struer canoe. Hand made, but not by me.

Love those wood kayaks. Please post some pics when you're finished.

In another thread, I mentioned wanting to put in a MAME cabinet.  Why have one arcade game when you can have almost all of them.  Either that, or I want a pinball machine.

I have a teenager.   It's no fun.

To be serious now it's a blast having an older kid.  Otherwise I would NEVER have gotten into these hobbies:

Carniverous plants - front yard bog and travel to exotic locales
Weapons Of Mass Destruction - DIY trebuchets and various devices.  Nothing nuclear yet.
Fencing - he does it, I watch but at least understand a bit
Photography and Video - amazing how much piles up
Bonsai and most things Japanese including Miyazaki (film) and Hisaishi  (music)
Hiking
Wallace and Grommit

I'm sure they'll be more next week.

I wish I had such unusual hobbies.

I've been pretty boring all my life, amounting to not much other than:

Ace-ing high school,
Reading books,
Playing lots of video games,
Computer hardware(I love it),
Dropping out of college because I work at a ****ing recording studio

Once my GF meets me down here in florida she will get me to actually start doing things and I think my life will be much more fun at that point.  Unless someone forces me to do something I tend towards inactivity which isn't necessarily bad, but I know that I want to do other things with my life other than sit at my computer.

Before the missus moved in, I had the sit-down 2 player Sega Rally Championship. Single handedly the reason the best purchase I ever made, bar none (£200, the arcade went into liquidation, it was listed as broken. One set of diodes for a bridge rectifier later, voila!)

Sadly, in a 1 bed flat, it had to go when she moved in. I still don't have room for it now, but when I do, it comes straight back. It currently resides at a friends house.

Erm...let`s see...What is fun at the moment? I`m doing home improvement on my little house and garden which is hilarious sometimes because of happy accidents and unintended consequences alike.
       I post in a parapolitical/current affairs blog - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wrh/  when I get the time.
I make herbal tinctures, tisanes, liquid extracts, creams, lotions, afterhaves, custom toiletries and household cleaners from essential oils and raw base ingredients as I am a trained phytopharmacologist.
I listen to anything from Blues to Baroque music on my hand-made British Hi-fi.
I watch mostly European films - extreme cinema, cinema verite, parodies, psychological horror etc.
I travel to the med,Europe and North Africa and love old architecture and ancient history.
I do home-brewed beer and alcoholic cider sometimes.
I cook...although I don`t follow recipes or weigh or measure ; I do it by feel - mainly Indian curries and some French,Italian,Thai,Polish and Mexican dishes - I can bake as well because I had to for my two, now grown up kids.
I play don and blackjack cardgames.I play snooker on a 12 foot table sometimes - I`m trying to improve my breaks and safety play.
I like going to pubs to sample "real ale" - (not mass produced beverages) that have history- there`s two pubs in Manchester that are over 900 years old that I frequent.
As I am partly Polish - I drink and bring back vodkas and rectified spirits from Polska.
I like cycling in the Pennines (mountains) near me and go swimming rarely.
I build and customise computers because I don`t like many things off-the-shelf"
