Keycaps Commission / Gift ideas for BF
« on: Sun, 14 December 2014, 06:54:20 »
hi guys,

i'm trying to find a perfect one-year anniversary gift for my boyfriend. he's a pro dota2 player and he's best hero is clockwerk. i was wondering if there is a possibility to commission someone to make a clockwerk keycap ... and if so, could someone give me a name?

this is all very new to me - - i've been going through loads of threads here this whole day.

i think my plan right now is to get a Cherry 1869 and mod the cover/case into red with some words printed and have some custom key caps... and suggestions will be helpful too!

thanks!

It would be very expensive as the starting price is $200, but Mandolin can do a commission for sculptures on keycaps.
No idea what the price of Clockwerk would go up to.
It would also take the guy maybe up until maybe February to make it since it would be made by hand.

200 is quite expensive but I guess if it does work up some of he's fans might be interested in buying and can bring down some of the costs?

I honestly don't know your price range. If I did, I could possibly suggest something else keyboard related.
Also: She does have a REALLY long wait list, but if you want something of superb and proven quality, then head to Noko and she can do custom leather wrist rests with anything imprinted on it.
I don't know what pricing for that would be like, and more importantly you won't know when she'll actually get around to starting and finishing it.

now i'm thinking of maybe getting a 3d artist and getting it 3d printed... do you think this has a better chance?

Perhaps, although it would be in one solid colour. Unless of course you get someone else to paint it.
If you do do so, then getting it in brass from shapeways would look absolutely amazing.
People have used 3d printed caps before and it has worked out well for them.
There are some complaints of loose fits, but that is easy to fix with a bit of plastic wrap.

This is probably more cost effective, and is still a good idea.  :thumb:

Is your BF Tony? I kid.

The cheapest way to do this would probably be 3d printing. It shouldn't be too hard to find someone to model rattletrap for you, especially since he's not a particularly complex shape. After that, a little bit of paint for like a warhammer model or something should spruce that right up.

As far as wood paneling on an 1800 case, that might be too hard to do for a reasonable price. I suggest spraypainting one gold instead.

I do custom keycaps and sent my details via PM. There's no limit to what could be done (metallic imitation or real alloys, leather, fur, fiber optic, flexible) but it's costly.

If you got a huge time constrain, the ideal cost/effective alternative would be to have a 3d printed keycap made or another artisan accessories should be nice and unique.
