Spacebar 6.25 units Alps Switch Costar-style Stabilizers
« on: Sat, 20 December 2014, 18:30:52 »
Does anyone know where to find spacebars that are 6.25 units that take an Alps-mount switch and Costar-type stabilizers?

This is for replacement spacebars for the KBP V60 Matias Mini Keyboard.

Signature Plastics will sell you one, but it might not be cheap. Matias could probably sell you one.

Thanks. I will check out these sources.

BTW, I am typing on my V60 Matias Quiet Click Mini Keyboard right now. I have replaced all the keycaps except the spacebar. The modifiers are from a Dell AT101W -- the stabilizers work just fine, and I like the rounded profile of the mods on the bottom row to match the rounded profile of the spacebar. The alphanumeric keycaps are from a Data General 6311. The stepped CapsLock from the Dell didn't fit in the allotted space, so I have temporarily borrowed the CapsLock from my Ortek MCK-84 until I can find another non-stepped CapsLock (or better, Control) from another donor board.

I am really enjoying the V60 Matias, especially now that I have been able to replace the stock keycaps -- except for that pesky spacebar! However, I should count my blessings, because the spacebar on the V60 is perhaps the quietest spacebar I have ever encountered -- no bottoming-out click or return-stroke clack, and no rattle whatsoever.

That was a long, long journey just to replace a set of a 60% keyboard. That is the issue with ALPS stems. You should be interested in an interest check for a full set of double shot keycaps for ALPS that is now at SP group buy site.

Oy. The stabilized caps (except the spacebar) won’t work on his V60 keyboard. It’s not clear that he has a keyboard that they would work on. If not, why should he be interested?

It wasn't too difficult to gather up some donor boards, and the stabilized caps from the Dell AT101W worked just fine on the V60. I am typing on it now, with all "new" caps (except for the spacebar), and the stabilized keys are working beautifully -- crisp and even response with not a trace of rattle.

If the stabilized keycaps in the set on the SP IC would not work on the V60, then I suppose I would not be interested. In addition, I would much prefer to have PBT, at least for the alphanumeric keys. On the other hand, for the sake of promoting Alps/Matias switches, I will take a look at the SP IC and possibly cast my vote.

Currently, I am using alpha keys from a Data General 6311. They look like dye-sub PBT, but they feel too smooth (although not clammy like ABS); I have not yet done a salt-water density test or acetone test. Although I am reasonably satisfied with the new face on the V60, I am going to continue looking for some dye-sub PBT caps that have a slight pumice-like texture. I have an AEK, but I don't particularly like the font, shape, or color of its keycaps.

I think most of those Acer 6311 keyboards were pbt dyesubs, but some of them might have been printed ABS. They’re definitely not the nicest dyesubs ever, but a nice option considering how cheaply the keyboards can be obtained on ebay.
