[AUS] 'Cheap' HHKBs.
« on: Mon, 05 January 2015, 22:27:37 »
So I'm new here and have spend the fast few days searching for the cheapest option to get my first mechanical keyboard, a HHKB, to Australia. After comparing with various proxy sites, elitekeyboards the cheapest HHKB I was able to find is from this seller on eBay seems to have decent feedback, free and decent shipping from Japan and comes brand new. To compare, the second cheapest option is to get it from elitekeyboards and despite them selling it for $235 USD (289 AUD) the shipping from the US to AUS is around $55+ USD which will end up costing us around ~$355 AUD. It's only ~$10 in savings but if you have ebay vouchers it can be more. Also they have the blank white HHKB in stock which is currently not available from elitekeyboards (I know it says it's in stock but when you try to checkout with it says the item is unavailable).

Ouch!  Mine cost about half that, albeit secondhand.

If you can wait, they do occasionally turn up on eBay.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I think its that dam US exchange rate that is playing havoc with overseas purchases. up to 20% (or a bit more) mark up just to match the US dollar. There was this sweet sweet moment a few years back when the Australian dollar was worth a tiny bit more than the US dollar. I wish I would have gone to town then. I guess its better than when the 1 AUD bought like 55 US cents (but I didn't even have the internet then).

The free shippings pretty good though, I would think that it would be worth at least $40.

I've already ordered from them :p, I've been waiting since November last year to find a second hand one from Australia (not here or on reddit but on ebay) and all the second ones I've found are overseas and usually sell ~$30 below the retail price. So I think the extra price I'm buying for a brand new one is worth the time I'd have to wait for a second hand one to show up.

Yeah it's crazy how low the australian dollar is right now, considering it was 1:1 only a few years ago. I didn't really go on a crazy spending spree during that time but we did take a holiday to the US to taking advantage of it.

Wow good timing for a US trip. I wish I had done that, at this rate I couldn't justify a holiday in the US and unless we have another bit of luck with the AUD matching USD again I will probably never go. Mind you I would go back to Europe in a second even with a bad exchange rate.

I purchased mine through tenso from amazon.co.jp. The Australian dollar is alright against the yen last time I purchased (ended up getting a hhkb pro jp for ~$290AUD about two months ago) which is really nice and comparable to EK

Edit: Forgot to mention that the actual price is ~25,000 yen and tenso charges roughly 40AUD for shipping and all fees to Sydney. They ship express so you'd get it in a about a week.
