MX Distributor Pricing
« on: Fri, 09 January 2015, 00:24:02 »
There are a couple local distributors where 100 clears are about 100 dollars, but mkb.com has a 100 pack for around 50. Does anyone know why there is such a price difference?

Specialised item. They can charge whatever they like locally on the off chance people don't want to wait for shipping. See it all the time where I live with electronics and prototyping stuff, a Serial-USB adapter that costs $3 on eBay is like $35 around the corner from my house.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

MK has about the best prices you're going to find short of ordering in bulk through China. I find it quite irritating that Cherry don't sell direct (especially since I live in Europe), only through distributors, since most distributors put some crazy high markup on them and have very small bulk discounts. Even Mouser and Digikey charge around $1 per switch for all the MX variants they stock.

It's just crazy that the cheapest way for someone in Europe to get switches made in Europe is ordering from the States or China.

7bit: €0.65 per switch, €4 shipping
mechanicalkeyboards.com: $49 for 100 switches, about $30 shipping to Europe last time I checked, about $20 import tax

I'm surprised you found mx clear switches locally they have historically been harder to get. I would make sure they are genuine.

Yeah, I think I will order a couple from there if I can find a mail proxy, see if they are legit, then if they are, I can buy 1k for only 209, compared to 980 from local distributors.

I just called Cherry to see if I could direct order from them, and if you are a non-exsisting customer, you need to pay at least 100k USD a year worth of switches :/.

How many switches do you realistically need?

Also be prepared for those taobao switches to be used.

I think 50 was the minimum order, and TBH, if they are used, better. Worst case scenario I clean off some solder. With them used, that makes them not scratchy, and I plan on selling these after I tune them.

So you are only buying the switches to resell them?

I plan on buying them, swapping springs, lubing, stickering, the whole 9 yards, then selling them.

If you're going to be swapping springs, lubing, stickering the switches, used switches are definitely the way to go. You're going to make them like new, anyway, so why start with new switches? :)

Exactly, and they won't have that awful new clear scratch.

This might be them, when I google search the product code it pops up with an image of them, but I am not 100% sure.

Update on the switches: I need a minimum order of 500 switches, and for some reason that brings the price up to 1400 yuan even though it says it is only 1yuan per switch. This would cost me about 265 USD, and that is about 50 cents per switch, which is about 50 cents per switch. I will have to wait a while to buy it :( . But if someone could help me accurately translate it instead of google's translate, that would be helpful.

I'm not sure where you expect to find genuine cherry switches in large numbers for much less than $0.50/switch unless they are used and even then it isn't common to find large quantities. Otherwise if you find cheaper prices it is more than likely the switches are either fakes or heavily used and problematic and you will have to go through and verify which ones are working.

Yeah, I will probably just buy from mk.com, as besides buying used boards, they are the cheapest.
