"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Because it's a pretty good forum and forums are in my opinion a far healthier and more enjoyable alternative to social media.

So what I'd really like to know—and I think of this each time I see this topic—is, what's this "joining" thing the OP refers to? Do you have to actually join something here (i.e. send money, receive a special badge, whatever)? All I do is log in, read stuff, and post stuff. Am I missing out on an immense hidden members-only area for real keebheads?

Of course it may be one of those things where if you have to ask, it means no one's invited you because you're the kind of person who asks about this stuff, and who wants peeps like that hanging around? Let's face it, you can't win. Still, I'm wondering.

You have to join with your keyboard to be a part of geekhack.

Inquiring minds need to know, is it daytime all the time over in Deskthority land or do they have a night theme as well?

Any secret and not so secret society worth joining needs some velvety dark backdrops.

So I can give myself more reasons and excuses to drain my bank account and talk about peripherals with people who actually understand how important they are.

Also, I kinda like the vibe here the best. I post on the Reddit board sometimes, but I like the smaller community feel and atmosphere so far. I tried posting on a Discord room just about mechanical keyboards, but I prefer to talk about KBs and tech stuff on Geekhack, Reddit, and in YouTube comments really.
Current driver: HHKB Pro 2 (BKE Ultra Lights), Wooting One w/ Flaretech Red switches and HyperX PBT keycaps.

Other keyboards I own and like: Realforce 87U Variable Weight, Realforce 87U 55g, Niz Plum, Magicforce 108 Gateron Reds w/ O-Rings.

Other keyboards I have: Magicforce 68 Cherry MX Brown, Havit Low-Profile Kailh Blue, Logitech K740,
Yeah, it's a loooooooooooot of keyboards. :P

That should be posted in the "unpopular opinions" thread.
"I never understood wind. I know windmills very much, I have studied it better than anybody. I know it is very expensive. They are made in China and Germany mostly, very few made here, almost none, but they are manufactured, tremendous — if you are into this — tremendous fumes and gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything. You talk about the carbon footprint, fumes are spewing into the air, right spewing, whether it is China or Germany, is going into the air. A windmill will kill many bald eagles. After a certain number, they make you turn the windmill off, that is true. By the way, they make you turn it off. And yet, if you killed one, they put you in jail. That is OK. But why is it OK for windmills to destroy the bird population?" - Donald Trump - Turning Point USA speech - 2019-12-22

I came over here from r/mk. At first I just wanted to be more aware of interest checks and group buys, but I'm learning to appreciate the community over here. I like that a conversation can take place over time compared to the day long string of comments on reddit.

It has also helped me to actually try to contribute. Without the pressure of meaningless internet points I feel much more comfortable sharing.

Yeah, i generally enjoy GH more than something like r/mk and it's fast-paced posts and short-term discussion. GH is a place where you can learn, contribute and educate each other while still being active on following stuff like ICs and GBs.

Totally agree.  Each individual community offers its own unique benefits and drawbacks, and some feel more likely to foster community than others.  The continuing discussion and lack of downvotes here appeal greatly to me.  But like many others, I started on r/mk too, and visit daily.

Someone also summarized (quite well) the roles that GH, Reddit and discord all play as the community evolves.
I think it was in the “is GH dying” thread.

It's always impressive for how long people continue to discover and use old guides like that.  :)  Glad you could find it, get some use, and stick around!

Completely agreed, by the way - Making Stuff Together has always been the best part of GH.  :thumb:

I've lurked forums for years, and When Reddit killed most of them I had really had very few left to lurk.

However Geekhack was different, probably one of the friendliest forums I've been on. I'd say that people here on the average are kinder than on the /r/mechanicalkeyboards

so it's my new keyboard hangout spot.
