Hey there!
« on: Fri, 30 January 2015, 13:49:27 »
Hey everyone!

To start off with, I've just recently gotten into the mechanical keyboard stuff - and yes, I have been warned that this can (or is going to) be quite expensive.
I'm looking forward to the community, to all the people crazy about and obsessed with mechanical keyboards and their knowledge and skills, which I want to absorb.
I guess I will mostly read topics, as I don't have that much to contribute (yet).

My first mechanical keyboard and the one I'm using right now is a corsair vengeance K70 with MX-Blue switches. I am quite satisfied with the tactile feedback, although sometimes I feel like the blue switches require just a little bit too much force to actuate. Moreover I've found the numpad to be totally useless and if there are no compelling reasons to do otherwhise, I will never get a full-sized keyboard again. The last downside for me is the non-oem layout of the caps, making it very hard to replace them (in addition to having a ISO layout...).

Thus I am getting a Poker 2 with MX-Reds in ANSI. I guess it'll take some time to get used to the new layout, but I really want to get some keycaps (all the pictures of your keyboards look great). All issues have been tackeled:

smaller size
mod-friendly layout
lighter switches (primarily for gaming: WASD movement just feels so much better with reds)

Now I am eagerly awating the shipment of my Poker II!

(Oh my god, I just accidently hit the back button in my browser and for a moment I thought my entire text was gone ... (although typing is fun on mechanical keyboards ... hm))

Well, that's me. Hi!  :)

Welcome to Geekhack!

MX reds and blues actually have the same springs, but reds are slightly lighter as they don't have the tactile feedback that blues have.  They are also somewhat quieter.

Are you getting an ANSI Poker?  I don't think I've seen an ISO version.

Yeah, sometimes the tactile bump is just slightly too much. Maybe I should try to lube my switches.

In fact there is a ISO Poker II, even with PBT caps. But they are out of stock anyway. I'm getting an ANSI board just to leave the door open for any modifications.

Thanks! I will for sure, just one question: where is the right place for sharing? I wouldn't want to open a new thread just for telling you how I'm handling ANSI.  :D

Hello. Nice little bit on the K70, its always nice to hear a 'fresh take' on a board. Do you game? If so you'll probably love reds. I do, but make more mistakes when typing on them.

I went for the K70 primarily because of the aesthetics. Should the opportunity arise I will go for a (more or less) selfmade TKL board with an aluminum case. However I'm not really good with my hands and I still lack some fundamental skills (like soldering). But I want to try, I guess.
As for gaming: I do game and I have had the chance to test red switches: they feel really good for gaming! For typing I prefer blues (or maybe clears, haven't had the chance to test those) but as I said: the feedback on blues is just slightly too much. When I tested browns they were too mushy, so I went for blues instead. I will try to lube my blues when I feel up to it!

Yup, lubing helps.

Also: nice to see other people from CB on GH  ;)

Well, I guess I just need to find the confidence to go for some lubing then.  :p

Damn you! You guys on CB got me hooked on mechanical keyboards, now I'm becoming an addict. No hard feelings though. :D

ANSI keyboard will give you lots more options for customising keycaps.  Lots more.

A thread about your experience switching from ISO to ANSI would probably fit best into the ergonomics section.  Because it's about "protecting your health while computing".  Maybe.

Or maybe just the keyboards section.

Or, if you turn it into a proper review, like an ISO user's review of an ANSI keyboard, the reviews section would be the place to go!
