PSA: Blank buckling spring keyset - $20 @ Unicomp, all the time

This is a normal price--not a sale--but gosh it's a good deal. Posting for visibility, in case some Model M users aren't aware.

Where else can you get a full PBT set for $20? Nowhere. The answer is... nowhere else.

P.S. You do have to buy a spacebar separately for $3.

Remember that these sets do not come with space bar, and that they do not make a "large" (ie classic) bright white or a "small" (ie contemporary) black space bar.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

I came in here to type this exact information. Also hidden, or at least I couldn't find it is the replacement blanket part#.
for 1391401 I got this response:

We do sell the rubber blanket. Use the link below.
http://www.pckeyboard.com/page/Misc/MEM
Enter "rubber blanket part number 1403033" in the part number box.

I haven't tried one of these but I plan to. Anyone else use these? How do they compare?
Also is there a list of part numbers to use for specific model membrane replacements?

So really it is an "Almost Complete Unprinted Buckling Spring Button Set" :p
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Interesting. Do you know if they sell replacement membrane parts for SSK or if the full size parts can be easily adapted?

I have no idea on that. I've never looked into it. I can go check around there site and see if there is a list of specific part numbers or open a ticket inquiry.

Edit: There doesn't seem to be any part number information or descriptions on their site. It would seem there is a list somewhere that needs to be found or compiled.

Not everything that they sell is accessible without an email question.

They are good about answering direct questions, and will read notes that come with an order.

Be sure that "membrane" refers to mylar sheets with traces printed on them, and "blanket" refers to the rubber sheet that lies against the metal plate.

And yes, I think that the current thin white latex sheets feel more responsive than the old thick black rubber ones.

PS - apparently, a "spacebar" is not a "button"

Thank you. Good to know on that blanket. I made one for my ssk out of this: Polyurethane Strip, .020" Thickness, 12" Width, 90A Durometer, 24" length and it was a tedious pain in the ass I'd rather not repeat. It feels really damn nice and snappy though.

This is not a Full PBT set, it's a Nearly Full PBT set.  :p

That said, these are some cheap dyesubs. If only Unicomp could be persuaded to do cherry MX dyesubs too. Don't they understand that there is a healthy market for them?
