Hello AND.... down the rabbit hole i go
« on: Wed, 04 February 2015, 21:37:15 »
Hello all,

So I bought a corsair K70 (mx red) keyboard about 8 months ago and found that I am not a big fan of mx reds.  They are just too light for me.  Though I am a fan of mechanical keyboards.  So about 2 months ago I started looking into other MKs and found the HHKB pro 2 which I found quite interesting though at the time thought was a bit on the expensive side.  Thought topre switches might be the way to go and looked at the novatouch which was a fair bit cheaper with the added advantage of replacing keycaps but did not have any programmability that I could see.  After reading up on the topre's I was not sure if they would be firm enough at they seem to be about the same actuating force as a red but tactile.  Over the next month looked at many MK's and definitely like the 60% layout so looked at mx based board (WASD, Ducky, Vortex, Etc.) determined that mx clears may be the way to go.  I ended up finding and ordering a poker II with clears on Massdrop and a Tex aluminum case.  Hopefully it's what I will like.

Anyhow during this time I found GH and r/MechanicalKeyboards though I have to say GH has more useful information by well experienced folks.  After spending some time here, you have opened my mind to the many possibilities that an individual can accomplish customizing a keyboard.  I find so many things I would like to buy and do.  Now I am thinking about replacing the keycaps on the poker 2 that I have not even received yet.  I found the Hack'd By Geeks caps in the group buy offered by [CTRL]ALT which I really like the old school style of them with the colors and SA profile.  But at the same time I say, I am already in $200+ on my poker 2, do I really want to spend another $120 for keycaps.  Answer probably but I still have a week to decide.

On here I see so much many possibilities like custom PCB's, controllers, cases, caps, etc. that have unleashed my inner geek. I am really finding it hard to control myself.  I want it all and want it yesterday so I can tinker today.  The further I go down this rabbit hole the deeper it gets and can see large sums of money leaving my pocket on what in the end is the most common of input devices for a computer though there is nothing common about what is found here in the rabbit hole.  The rational side of me says this is just insane while my inner geek say this is absolutely awesome.  I don't know whether to love or resent finding this place but it has caused a change in my "normal" life as I have become a GH enthusiast!  If it’s for the better or not only time will tell.

Hello and welcome to Geekhack! It is called the place of wallethack for a reason!  :p  But just take it easy and know that you can live through others! Admire nice pictures, watch some videos, read lots and lots, and you will not spend so much money on things you don't truly need or want.

Welcome to Geekhack!

The Poker is an extremely popular keyboard, and MX clears a favourite switch of many people.  You can't really go wrong with either, and if you do find that that keyboard doesn't do it for you, you should be able to sell it for nearly what you paid for it.

Should you happen to decide to get the Hack'd By Geeks set, it will probably be one of the smoothest group buys you will ever be part of.

I suspect that SA keycaps (e.g. the Hack'd By Geeks set) on MX clear switches will be a sweet combination :D
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I did quite a bit of research before I bought it so i think it will be a good fit for me.  I really like the compactness of the 60% board so i am anxious to see how well i adjust to it since all my KB's through the years have been 104 keys.  I too suspect that the SA keycaps on clears will be a sweet combo which is what makes it so hard to resist.

The first thing you'll notice is how much free desk space you suddenly have.

Then it will hit you that the mouse is much closer to the centre line of the keyboard, and that it feels so much nicer that way.
